No Marty those problems are not typical. They are highly untypical actually. We don't see any issues with kohler engines unless the user isn't taking care of it or the very rare issue that is a warranty issue and that happens in the first couple hundred hours. We have had 3 issues since I have been doing this (including JWC years) that were warranty issues. And and can't ever remember having to do either repair you have to have done. What engine is your machine running? Maybe should ask that before saying anything else.

Currently running a Kohler 27. I'd have to go look to be sure, but I believe I have a little north of 3500 hours on this motor. I am happy with it because my prior engines were Briggs and they never lasted past 2500 to 3000 miles. I used to keep a new motor in reserve as soon as the one on the TM got around 2200 hours.
