You can use those in Michigan as a camming lock to climb out of snowdrifts. That might be what they are, I don't climb mountains.

Actually Saiger ties them around his feet and never loses traction.

We had to test several prototypes till we got the beer opener just right. Clyde told me it was one of the best prototyping he has ever done, the others worked but they just didn't have the right pop on the caps so we kept on testing till even a drunken carpet cleaner could get a cap off....man the testing can be brutal sometimes.
