Is it a bad idea to put a muffler after a heat exchanger to make it quieter?

No, but usually the hx baffles enough to quiet it down.

Shouldn't hurt anything.

Jesse;

A better idea is to route the exhaust under the van and run an exhaust pipe to the rear of the van.

Less back pressure on the blower, and the same noise level.

A good muffler shop can do it quickly for a modest investment.

Yes my 2045 was way to loud. I went to a local private muffler shop. Old Wayne knows his mufflers. He drilled down into the floor at the side door and used the same bullet muffler that Cobb uses then a pipe to the rear of the right front tire. Wow a major difference. the cost was $ 200 and well worth it. jz.
