Need some help here, I just received a project, it's and area rug that looks like it was never cleans and has been worn thru at the end
The carpet is so compacted I can't even roll it up, my problem is I have very limited space right now and was wondering the best way to tackle this. I was thinking of puting it upsidedown on another carpet and run the Hoover conquest over it, the Hoover has a brush with a beater bar section. I have a small 175 but only have the brush (not sure that would help) what's the best procedure that's safe.

But did you charge the custy enough to do that and still put some money in your pocket?

I'm not a rug guy and don't play one on TV
I'll most certainly defer to those more knowledgeable

And you didn't mention whether rug was a $300 synthetic machine made or a big buck wool

But if synthetic and in sound condition I wouldn't be afraid to hang it over the deck rail and beat it with a tennis racket or leaf rake

No clue what you mean by "cracking" though. ..never seen a heavily impacted carpet"crack"

It's full packed with dirt, the backing is going to crack if I roll or fold it

If it has a canvas on the back side it is likely there to cover the latex that is holding the rug together.
Any whitish, yellowish dust under the rug?

If it is, then this rug will not benefit from in plant cleaning as immersion will deteriorate the latex even more.
Transportation and folding will also break the latex backing even further. If that is the case be sure that the client is aware of all these issues as more damage is likely to show. If the latex is breaking down and not holding the yearns, the vacuum may pull some yarns up. Being too aggressive with the cleaning of a rug like that (cracking, heavily soiled etc) may cause more issues than be able to correct.

If indeed that's the case (pictures and more info will help), walking away may at times be the best option.

Cost of rug is no indication of quality.

Be careful and make sure that client understands the potential damage, is willing to take it, signs to same and has realistic expectations.

Do your self a big favor and don't touch it until you upload some good pictures of both the front and the back of it, including tags if present, so everyone here can better advise you better on how to approach it so you don't dig yourself into a hole, if you have not done so already.

You could use a vacuum with a non aggressive beater bar like a stand up oreck.

The brush is real soft but still beats the dirt loose.

I know my sharks beater bar is real aggressive but you can you the vacuum relief on the hose so it doesn't bite down so hard.

Sound like it needs a ton of dry soil removal your talking hours of vacuuming Warner style.

That would be the turn it down point because your not going to restore a super worn rug. So is she willing to pay premium for it?

Larry I may be shooting in the dark but I can read. It won't bent it feels like it's loaded with soil. I've actually seen a few carpets that are so loaded with dirt they get hard. Literally packed to the top with dirt.

And they can be vacuumed, a picture isn't going to allow you to feel it's hard as a rock.

I'm sure Ken's not going to rune a wrecked rug.

Willy that's funny my girl has a low low cost carpet that stinks and she has no pets (ok release the wise cracks)

I highly recommend you get that to a rug plant for top down dusting, possible dye setting, possible blocking


unless they don't care and will be happy with any outcome, possibly stinky, bled and out of square..
