Personally I don't like hooking it to the rail. It's great it's off the carpet for spraying but the movement will take off paint. Every time you lift the tool and set it down the hose moves kind of like a saw. Not a fan.

Joe sales a gadget called a stairclimber that makes cleaning stairs a cinch.

Yeah I get what youre saying .. the sawing effect with the ridges .. but as I put the wand to the floor, the hose drops away from the rail enough to leave a pretty good gap since the bungi strap is stretchy !! If Im not cleaning the steps, Id like to keep the hose off them without tarping.

I had a job where I was cleaning bedrooms only and the grand staircase was white as can be. The saw effect would of left something from my hose I imagine.

We clean the hose every time we roll it up. Only works I guess if you have an electric. I have covered new carpet on the stairs but I use a painters drop cloth. They make a 4'x12' that works great. A tarp would be a little slippery .

I put a mat over the rail and then put the hook and hose on the mat.

Same thing with half sets of stairs with landings. I will put a mat on the wall/floor instead of corner guard. Stays in place better than corner guard.

If I'm on the second floor and hang a hose over a half wall or railing, I put it on a mat. Same if I hang one out a window.

I put a mat down at front door before I ring the bell and right inside door as soon as I walk in. If I put tools down in someone's house, it goes on a mat.

Joe's tool looks great for doing stairs.

Not too many houses down here have stairs, maybe a third.

Thanks, now I have an excuse for getting an electric reel. Never had a customer mention a "dirty" hose, but waiting for it to happen.
