How far do you take your edge cleaning?

Do you ALWAYS vacuum regardless of how it looks? (looks can be deceiving)

Do you realize that the black line is often just fibers, lint and dust and NOT carbon staining?

Do you ever brush the edge before you vacuum?

I'm proposing that the below be added to the S100 standard;

Vacuuming should be accomplished in accessible areas. It is recommended when carpet styles exhibit crushing, matting, or tangling in entry, pivot, or high-traffic areas, that dry pile lifting precede or be combined with dry vacuuming. Particular attention should be given to areas where abrasive soils tend to build up, such as in entry areas.

Counter Rotating Brush machines equipped with catch trays are an effective substitute for a standard Pile Lifter style vacuum.

It is also recommended that the dust, hair, and lint accumulation at wall edges and corners be vacuumed, being careful to not damage the baseboards or walls. Cleaners should perform this perimeter vacuuming before preconditioning. A handheld or pole brush style (no metallic) Grout Brush can be very effective at helping remove embedded debris from edge and corners, especially along carpeted staircases

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and grout brushes were in the distant future, my father made his carpet cleaning technicians use a broom to brush the edges of the room before vacuuming.

They hated it, and skipped it when they thought they could get away with it.

A grout brush would have been great to have then.

Yeah, trying to vacuum up broom straw can be like reading a Melon post

My father wasn't one to be disputed....just quietly disobeyed without being caught. Ask me how I know.

In any event, I showed Lee the picture and he said he wished they had those then. Maybe his cleaners (and his son...) would have done what he asked more often.

At this rate, Mikey's going to be my adopted brother soon.

I disagree with the CRB catch tray part. The trays are a pain in the ass. Bulky and get in the way. They often fall off. I threw my trays away. People try and make a CRB the END-All-Be-All of carpet cleaning in reality it isn't. Use a good vacuum to vacuum, and a CRB to agitate. Keep it simple.

As far as filtration lines go, I do what I can but educate my customer why they are there. 1. inefficient vacuuming and not edging, 2. During construction of the house, the exterior wall sill plates were not sealed with caulk causing drafts.

you have the pos Kansas trays, the Nebraska's are much better.

and did you know you can run with just the back tray and still pick up all the dingle berries.

I wont vacuum a piss soaked rug. A tray'd CRB is a great option if there is lots of dry soil present.

Did an estimate this morning. Commercial level loop with black cove base. As the lady is showing me the building she is talking about how bad the vacuuming is and take a paper towel and wipes a couple of spots on the bottom of the cove base and the towel comes up black. I added a little more to my estimate with a note to edge clean and wipe the cove base. It would be nice to have a tapered soft brush to edge with

You have to hit the edges with a vac and attempt to suck it up or the customer may discover they can and you will never get in that house again.

CRB collection trays are a pain BUT not having them is far worse. I have been in homes where the dog hair will fill 3-4 kitchen size trash bags. The large trays on the pro45 models pick up every bit and have huge capacity.

A lot of the filtration is not coming out. That's not to say you can't improve it. If you charge enough to make worthwhile, vacuum the edges like Marty says he does, prespray the edges, (adding a little pyratex to your prespray does wonders) scrub with whatever you have and hit it with a pmf edging tool. The only thing is, it's possible to over clean the edges and not be able to get the rest of the carpet to match.

Maybe Floor retailers should be sent grout brushes to give to consumers and a good vacuum and a safe spotter and some duckbill scissors and proper cleaning education and how to clean using rented equipment and how to use your Bissel and their over soaped soaps and ignore the internet for spotting with 8lbs of baking soda and Vinegar and and and.
Sell your truck mount it's all over we're toast!
Cheers! Martini time!

I use a Prochem Upholstery tool and edge all carpet and around furniture that is not moved. If its a bad filtration line I just hit it extra with Prespray. Almost always it comes right out.

I cant count how many times Ive heard the customer say that their previous cleaner didnt pay that much attention to detail. And it only takes a couple minutes.

But Im an idiot (beat you to it Marty)

You should hear the comments every time I pull out the CRB for a new customer.

I bought my helper a telescopic magnet....
Made her day... staples are her kryptonite...
We are doing ALOT of big commercial work, and people don’t give a Shyte where they throw the staples, or, CLIP THEIR FINGER, AND TOE NAILS @ WORK... gross.
Anyway, she should be on here posting, cause I don’t vacuum shit... she does, and does a damn good job...
And yes, she’s insistent on edging, even the stuff we never see....
Do we vacuum every job? Yes... is it me? No...
I guess that makes us kinda premium????
