How far will you travel for a free estimate?

thats the nice thing about living off referrals. When potential clients make contact, they were referred by a family member or friend that was impressed with the work, so price really isnt important. Sure they may ask for a phone estimate but but I cant even remember when I actually drove to a house to give one. I could look it up tho.

How or what do you say in order for you not to give a free estimate?

They can get a free estimate over the phone or though our online booking site. If they want a definite price and are making their decision based on price, I tell them to call someone else. I'm positive they can find someone cheaper. My goal is Not to beat my competitor's prices, but to beat their quality.

I pretty well do the same thing. I am usually within $50 of what I would have charged if I was there and measured it. If a customer is that concerned over $50 on a $300-$400 job, they can call someone else.
