How many of you have cleaned a urine drenched rug in a plant setting?

I just bid a wall to wall piss job.

Shall be using Cobbs insta-rabies super foamy stuff, out of a garden watering can. I better order more.

The dogs are cute, though.

There are techniques coming . . .

that will actually destroy urine in the carpet.

Hydrocarbons will be broken down to hydrogen, and simple carbon compounds.

This can occur much quicker than you can rinse a carpet.

Again, if you've ever had the pleasure of flushing a urine FILLED rug until the water runs clean on your slab floor, you would know how pointless your one gallon of "USR" (not picking on any one product here) is.
@cleanking will back up here, it takes several hundreds of gallons of water to even remotely flush a 8x10 rug that's been turned into a daily Yorkie toilet.
These homes that @Nomad74 and Coastie are dealing with are being pissed in and on EVERY DAY, ALL DAY.
Your one gallon per visible pee spot isn't doing a damn thing beside make a toxic mess underneath even gooier.

But it smells better until the check clears.

That's exactly why we don't claw, I've never been able to market it well, or make anybody happy with the results

Remember Mike, rugs are not carpet. I know what you're talking about but the biggest problem in carpets is the padding and subfloor.

Rugs hold a lot more soil than carpet. And don't let it go very easily.

Washing rugs and cleaning carpet are two different things.

And no, you are not going to flush urine out of the pad or pull it from the subfloor. But we can remove stains and minimize the odor.

I cleaned 7 fairly clean rugs last week and it took about a hundred gallons of water just to get a couple of the rugs wet all the way through. If there was urine I would still be rinsing them.
The thin ones or loose woven aren't as bad to flush out.

What do you offer those asking for help with urine soaked carpet that do not have the money to replace and will not get rid of the animals? Do you refuse to work for them or clean as usual after thoroughly explaining how the odor will only be worse?

@Mikey P I would agree that it does take hundreds of gallons to flush urine from some rugs, most rugs even. However like Steve is stating there is a difference how easily urine will flush out of a bound piece of carpet versus a 3/4" thick Chinese 90-line. In no way would I argue that the claw and OSR are completely removing the urine blah blah blah, however in our experience the claw and OSR does eliminate noticeable reactivation of odor from our HWE cleaning AND the biggest thing: it almost completely eliminates any issues we have with the sub carpet urine spots wicking back into larger stains after we HWE (even after multiple dry passes). For us we are able to charge appropriately, educate sufficiently, achieve desirable results and make a lifetime client time and time again. Most of the these clients that prefer this solution understand there is no true permanent fix, however they do want a solution that will last longer than a month, and for us the claw and OSR solution does seem to get most people to their next cleaning 9-18 months later. They know unless they solve the source of the problem (the untrained dogs or God-forsaken cats) that it will never truly stop, they're just looking for a longer lasting solution and that's why we offer it (and at $35/gallon it works out pretty well for us).

With all that said, I can't hardly take standing on the claw doing nothing and I'd rather not have my guys standing around either, but that's why we charge what we do. I'm hopeful there will be advancements in odor removal chemistry to allow us to move away from this method completely, until then we will keep clawing on!

We have a company in our service area which does carpet repairs and and odour removal. They use clorine dioxide and guarantee odour removal.

Mike we used to market it heavily and it has gained us a lot of reviews and a reputation that we can help folks that have those kinds of situations. For the past couple years we have not been heavily marketing ourselves as odor experts but the reputation has stuck. With that said, we are still servicing the very high end (money can't fix stupid) so even though we are treating these odor issues it does not mean we are cleaning dumpy homes.

I've had a lot of success at making happy customers. But it can be a crap shoot.

Just cleaned some hallways at an apartment complex that allows dogs. Hallway stunk like dog pee so bad it gave me a headache.

The odor is gone for now but I know it will be back due to the dog still living there. But I got paid well and manager is happy.

I've had plenty of failures too but how else do you learn.

We always ask the size of the dog. Big difference in puddles from a 3 pound dog compared to even a 10 pound dog.

And the mandatory question if the indidcate that they have pets:

Are you haveing your carpets cleaned because of a strong urine odor or is it just time to have them cleaned?

After asking that question I will find out why they want there carpets cleaned at this point in time. Something is a catalyst for them picking up the phone in the here and now.

Understanding why they want there carpets cleaned will allow to manage expectations.

Hard to manage expectations if I am offering a service which is hit and miss.

Each job has to be evaluated on sight. Expectations have to be lowered. Explain that replacement and sealing floors is best alternative.

The hard part is finding the spots to treat. It doesn't matter how big the dog is. Small dogs peeing in the same spot is just as bad as a big dog. Often worse due to more spots to find. It's those hidden spots or not using enough disinfectant that gets you in trouble.
