Yep, lots of jobs being scheduled now and I was killing myself doing all the work .... so I got a chimp!
He is working out pretty good and it is nice to have help setting up / packing up
worked him for 2 days on "training pay" and now I need to figure out his regular pay

How do you O/O's pay the 2nd guy??? % of ticket or hourly

Is he going out to do his own route? If so pay him commission, if he is just going to be your helper hourly works. Monthly or biweekly bonuses are a good incentive to keep him motivated.

first off, you could treat him with a little more RESPECT by not referring to him as "chimp"

a good man can be one of your most valuable assets and literally worth their weight in gold long term

Only one I know of besides you with that bad habit is Mikey. I find it very insulting for an employee to be called a chimp, even in this environment. It comes off arrogant and gives the person no credit for being a valuable addition to a business.

If you intend to have a "chimp" 8-10 an hour may be adequate for a hose roller. If you want this person to consider your business a potential carrreer, then the ability to work up to 35-70k a year plus bene's seems more appropriate.

Ken you beat me to it...jokin around and even on this board I respect my employees to much to refer to them as a "chimp"...I actually cring when someone (Mikey, first time I hears that term) says that,,,how would you feel if your boss called you that infront of or behind you,,you would lose all respect from them and personally piss them off....be more professional than that and thats starts right there. I know a ton of buisness owners and I have never.. ever ..heard such a non respectful term towards a hard working employee.

Thanks for saying that Ken, I feel the same way, and have said so on another ocaision. Treat people the way you would want to be treated and it will pay off in many ways.

So I'm working on a kitchen counter top today and just about done when I tell the chimp to go up to the master bath counter and remove any loose grout so we can fill the few cracks along the back splash that the home owner was concerned about.

I go up a half hour later to see wtf is taking him so long only to find he removed ALL the grout.

He can pick his own ass tomorrow.

Maybe if you gave him respect and didn't call him a chimp behind his back, he would make those kind of mistakes. Or, maybe the definition of loose grout was not clear and when he started removing it more came losse and so on and so on.

I often have realized after the fact that it has sometimes been my lack of clarity or clear instruction when something wemt wrong.

Then again they may have just f'd up.

If he can remove all the grout in 1/2 hour I would say it was pretty damn loose

Ken,

how many hours/days per week does a tech have to work to make that kind of flow, and how many of your carpet cleaning techs make that amount?

is it just carpet cleaning and upsales or is there some h2o extraction included in those #'s???

Mikey, Maybe its lack of good training or bad comunication, or maybe you just hired the wrong person. Having employees is not easy and if your not up to the task of training and managing them, then it would be better to work alone or go get the proper training you need. Thats why some great players don't make good coaches. But either way, employees can be your greatest asset or your worst nightmare. Over the years I have learned to look at myself and see how I can be a better manager, and I'm still trying to get better.

All of our specialists make that or more, most in the mid to upper half it it and the one's that didn't had been off part of the year during seasonal layoff (they still make more than 35k). Thy are working 5-6+ days a week on average, everyone is diff with their drive. They clean carpet, upholstery, t & g, residentially and commercially. W have separate division for water damage so most is done by those crews, though our cleaners will often do the initial extraction.

I'm sure Ken shows plenty of respect to his top five Technicians but I'm willing to bet a fanny pack and some swishy pants that he and Brian refer to the other 35 knuckle dragging, drooling, minimum wage stiffs at Hagopian using racist and derogatory names far worse than "Chimp"..

You blew it on that one Mike, everyone knows I take BlackJack serious enough not to be drunk at a table. Might do something really stupid like spliting face cards.

Mikey, looks like you owe Ken a new fanny pack and a pair of swishy pant!!

I would NEVER refer to any of our cleaners as a chimp, knuckle dragger, etc. And we have 25 on location employees that have been with us for more then 5 years.

I will admit to privately refering to anyone that has been with us for less then a year as an FNG.

In 1985 a 135lb 18year old kid named James Holland went to Marine Corps Boot Camp, and every day for the next 3 months I and the rest of the recruits were reffered to as Chimps, A$$ Bags, Turds, Maggots, Faggots, Homos, and on and on. At the end of the 3 months I emerged a stronger person physicaly and mentaly. I went on to serve for 20 years. My "chimp" or "assistant CCer" was also a Marine and for that he will always be my brother. Did any of you ever call your brother a name in good humor? I told him all about this board and what I was going to post about him befor I did it, he thought it was funny. Some people on here are opinionated, red neck, holyer than thou, drooling over half exposed women that people post, and what ever else floats your boat, but hey it takes all kinds to make the world go round. So get over it and get off my a$$

Thanks for serving our country James!

Like Brian said we call them FNG's for the first year (not to their face though) but now I get what you are about. For us it is all about the people cause Brian, Dave annd I are not out there cleaning the carpet etc. The more we respect them, and the more we support them the more they treat our customers with the same and create less headaches.

Thanks Ken

Curtis you would be suprised how much even CC has in common with the Marine Corps

My Chimp/Brother/FNG/Nick the New Guy is out for a few days with a viral eye infection!!! He thinks he got it from a nasty carpet we cleaned the other day, so I am solo for a while

Got 2 eviction cleanings to do today!
