I wanna know how he gets his guys to work that much. most guys, including myself would be pretty gung ho the first year or so, but after that I would burn out and not want to work that much.

I do think ken should let a board regular come work for free, why the hell not I say.

It was a SOFT-BALL hi-JacK... !gotcha!

There are 1 major KEYS ...to achieving the BIG-BOY status ...!

VOLUME .....

This requires a HUGE investment in CAPITAL & MARKETING...!

YOU work for NOTHING for many years...building EQUITY & BASE...!
Once you can reduce or control your "NUT"...!
The PROFITS roll-in as a perpetual WINDFALL..."BAM"....You have reached your GOAL... :!:

95% of all start-up businesses are ....."DOOMED" because they are UNDER-CAPITALIZED...

ps ALL that GLITTERS is NOT GOLD...! Any interuption in volume.."cash flow".. is a NigHtmAre
for these companies... I would "guess" that not a week goes by ..that these Big BoyS...
don't wish they were just a 1 truck operation... !gotcha!

pss Their job's suck...LOTS OF STRESS....certainly a "RISK -REWARD" ...decision...

Harper, Good post!

That's why you're an O/O and not an employee....2 different birds.

My oldest brother has worked his ass off for 25 years at the same damn company for pay raises.....That takes a certain kind of person......I would guess about 70% of the population are like that.......and it probably was closer to 90% 20 years ago.

I have have got it!

Ken, I am sorry to say after reading all the post on "YOUR" business you will not make it! There is no way doing what you are doing that it is possible and the best thing you can do is shut the doors and turn out the lights. I am sorry to be the one to tell you this but it will never work.

This reminds me of my mother on my wedding day that I should think long and hard about what I was getting ready to do. Next month we will be married 31 years and we are still trying to make it work.

Boards still amaze me but they are humorous. !gotcha!

Right on Harpo, best Post by you in a long time, very good advice.

Or build a rug cleaning business and sell that. =)

We had 2 offers last year to buy us out.

And Zero-Res must be aiming for an IPO because they've approached several independents to buy them in our region. I figure they want to build their job numbers to leverage to sell themselves to an investment group.

Great book out called "Built To Sell" - quick read - that talks a lot about leveraging yourself to sell.

What exactly is your title / and responsibilities there?
What % ownership (if any) do you have?
What did you do before you married into money?

Ms."w"...is SPOT on in her "pErkY" ASSessment.... 8)

I believe that Mr. "B" & his group were poised to acquire market share .....
In late 2009 by purchasing Interlink to BusT-Up the BIG 2....

This is ONLY my opinion... :!: I believe they would have mastered this feat...
If not for this freakin economy...! The way Interlink was HaTcHetinG loyal long
term employees...They were obviously "trimming-up" their bottom line to maximize
their potential acquisition...

Unfortunately...all have suffered dearly simply due to poor TIMING.... that hurts
As Jon DON & Interlink continue to down-size and compete fiercely for the TOP spot...
Mr "B"...has positioned themselves to pick their carcuses when the sun has decomposed
the last remnants of their existence...

I do ADMIRE the cunningness & business savvy of his group... :!: They have acquired
some of the finest minds in this industry. They are venturing HUGE amounts of capital
& PURE BALLS in lue of their goal..! I must say BRAVO...survival-of -the fittest.... 8)

It is almost poetic justice that Interlink should go down this way... The BROS...
systematically acquire every decent independent dealer to climb to the TOP...
They all were dinosaurs....in realizing that "Brick & Mortar" is a thing of the past...!

On-Line sales & Sub-Contracted regional service centers are the way of the future.. !gotcha!

This will FORCE them to simplifiy their TM's...
Butler is the SHINING example of this business modle...

ps NONE of the ABOVE POST is TRUE.... shiteatinggrin
BUT iT sure was FUN....
sorry for the hIjAcK.... blowme

I would say buy commercial real estate and dont rent 12 shops like my dad did one of them He could of picked up for 300k and flipped for over a million easy.

Build assets isnt truckmounts its real estate buy low sell high. If You have a company that does X and has real assets it going to be more valuable period and maybe you can retire someday!

PS most Lottery winners are broke within 7 years How much do You have left Harp???? Dont burn it up that fast, I would say 10 rentals $1000.00 a month rent pay someone 10 percent to run it live off the other 9 grand. not a bad retirement plan.

the problem is this, for me I looked around and saw plenty of guys that should have been fired, but were not, I saw plenty of guys that were marginal to decent get the same pay raise I got every year, despite me being an exceptional employee. I watched one of the owners daughters get a position right out of school that was above that of my boss, my boss wasn't going to move up and that meant I sure as hell wasn't going to. so based on that I figured I was stuck where I was at. so I decided to get my work done, but no extra, to do what I was told, to do a decent job, and get things done in a reasonable period of time, BUT NO MORE. if I could get away with doing less work, I did, I developed a talent for doing very little but, the reality was I was STILL doing a better job than most of the guys.

problems like this have to exist in every company, even the ken snows of the world. what I would like to know is how he keeps the guy happy that has been there 3 years, the guy thats seen people come and go.

My brother is at the same company my Dad retired from after 35 years....Just 12 or 20 different name changes.

They both said that the secret to longevity and even getting to move up somewhat is to know and know how to do something that no other person knows how to do.

Works for them I guess.

I'll stick with owning a business or 10 and carving my own future...whether it be abundance or disaster. Either way, I've won.

What's with the questions? Jealous?

Of Ken? No,

I have cast my lot in life and did not marry for Money. I am jealous of the guys who built the business from the ground up. Every post from Ken is him swinging his dick around and positioning himself as a guru. I just don’t recall him ever answering the questions I asked. It does seem relevant to know what exactly his status is there and where he came from if he is going to keep doling out advice and boosting his ego here. And who the fook are you?

Wow, make no mistake....Ken knows his stuff.

Really smart guy..Friendly too...As long as you're not an ass to him....Actually he's still friendly after that usually as well.

One of the few guys I would take business advice from ....and have.

Mike,

Why the hostility?

You make a lot of assumptions in your comments. I am not sure you have any correct.

If you are going to Connections let's sit down over a beer and talk about all that money that Ken "married in to".

Let's also talk about the size of the operation he runs today versus 30 years ago when he "married into it".

I am sure Ken posts on Mikey's board for many of the same reasons you do. Getting and giving advice, making friends in the industry and having some fun.

Oh and I have been a Mikeysboard member since 2006. I just don't normally waste my time posting.

I hope the rest of your day goes well!

Hilarious Joe- and so far opposite the reality in 1980. We actually hid the fact we were dating for 6 months. Also I have been divorced since mid 2004 and made an owner in 2006 (equal partner with 3 sibs)

Mike I really think you have Ken pegged wrong, he is nothing like what you think he is. He’s been the driving force for the growth and continued growth in Hagopian.

Ken is also very helpful and freely giving of information, he’s given me info and consulted with me whenever I’ve asked anything of him.
He is extremely knowledgeable about marketing, media choices, frequency pretty much anything you’d want to know.

Rugs, while I’ve never asked him anything about rugs I he know rugs from reading his posts for years.

I really feel fortunate to know Ken, without MB I doubt I would have ever gotten to know him.

He’s an asset to MB as a resource and a great guy in my book. 8)

Ken can and will defend himself if he wants to.

I believe he numerous times mentioned the fact that he married into a lot of debt and the hagopian business was a much much smaller company than it is now.

I met Ken last year at Connections during the "walk about" at the trade show and I can tell you he is a nice guy and low key. (Hence the swishy pants nametag  ) I'm glad to get to know him and for me too, I will gladly take advice from him.

Now I only hope some of you smart people out there (Harper, Ken etc) will get smarter and quit smoking!!

No offense smokkkers, I just don't like smoke smell and I know its a waste of your health and your money!
