As you all know I live in a very rural southern area.....well I had a job for an older lady today. She was 80 and had lost her husband years ago. Anyways for the past 10 years she had been cleaning her own carpet and finally got to the point where she couldn't do it anymore so she called me.

Well here comes the interesting part....at least to me. You know how many of the folks around here sweep their carpet as a means of vacuuming. Well she did own a vacuum and suposedly vacuumed before I got there.....however she had been cleaning her carpet with dawn and a bucket....and a mop....damp moping it.

Needless to say the carpet was uniformly dirty.....kinda like bawbs whore house or whatever it is he does. However not quite to that extent of filth. She was quite impressed with the result....and I made sure to do 2 wet passes to flush it out with my greenhorn running end-zone. Oh and she was quite shocked at the method of cleaning I did and how dry the carpet was when I left....

Anyways I got a kick out of it....damp moping carpet. I know it's kinda sad, though did seem to be a smart person

Tim,

No anti-foam and your TM had no problems with dawn?

Mine would have...

No problems for sure. Empty tank and only did like 150 ft of carpet in that condition. I ran end zone for a rinse like I said. But I really don't know how much dawn she used probably not much. And if you think about its just damp moping isn't submerging the carpet in dawn.

I didn't notice any loss in vacuum, or any foam on the carpet. The cds is set up with a tray that faces up with a screen on it near the top of the tank so it don't pull from the water but from the tank lid....I don't know how other TM's are set up as I've only had one. I was a bit worried about it when I started but didn't have any symptoms.

She also said she uses wool light one time too maybe it had defoaming characteristics?...but it's impossible to know what exactly she did cause I wasn't there. It wasn't soiled as heavily as I thought it would be from dawn so it must of been very little each time.

I did a lady's carpet once and she was sweeping the carpet when I got there. She was using a broom, no kidding. Bunch of debris in that one.

I have noticed alot of Mexican people were I live do that. They will sweep the carpet with a broom. I make sure I run my vacuum over it a couple of times extra on those houses.

I have a large realty firm I clean for who employs a maid to clean all their rentals. This person sweeps the carpets instead of vacuuming. I get sick of having to bend over a pick up broom straw all the time. I've got to the point where I collect all the broom straw and dump it in the middle of the kitchen, or bathroom floor. Doesn't serve any purpose, but it sure makes me feel better thinking somebody, someday, will see the broom straw and say that sorry as$ed maid did a poor job.

Oh, believe it, or not, back in the 70's, mopping carpet was taught as a maintenance method. The idea was to use a shampoo (like Releasit), mix it up in a mop bucket, and then use just the tips of the mop head. Get them wet with the shampoo and brush them across the carpet to collect topical dirt.

Sounded stupid even way back then.

But ... at lease we called shampoo ... SHAMPOO ... unlike today.

There is a commercial here on TV that shows some kind of foamy crap a homeowner sprays on their carpet and then uses a sponge mop to scrub it in. In the ads it claims to get rid of all the allergens and dirt and buggies by lifting them to the surface with the foam.

Those with several years behind them may remember Glamorene. Foam that you mopping into the carpet with a sponge mop. Later vacuumed to remove all the nasty things that foamed to the surface.

The first product carpet cleaning product from the folks in Racine Wisc.

I see that Resolve has tried to copy something similar with their High Traffic Foam. That stuff drove me nuts when I'd hit it with the TM, foam city.

I've worked in Foam City.
I've met Mayor Residue and Cheif stickymague.

My uncle before he passed away had OCCD. Got up every day at 5am and started vacuuming, then sponge mopped the carpet. There could not be a spot anywhere on the carpet at any time.
First time I cleaned it, after 10 s.f. there was zero vacuum due to the foam in the hoses.
Good thing I had some Chemeister Rinsemaster on the truck.

When wall to wall carpet was first introduced, sweeping was a widely accepted practice. Installation today reflects that as still as the preffered method of installtion over stairs and in rooms is to let the lay of the carpet brush down towards the entrance points. Most of the time in Europe where sweeping is still a widely accepted practice, the doors were designed in the middle of the house and the stairs right in front of the door. Everything is swept to center down and out and the carpet is all layed to accomidate with the fall of the nap towards the front of the house so people could sweep with the grain. Makes ya glad we have vaccums!

Hey Marty, I found that broom again. Here is another picture of it with all the stuff the broom didnt get out of the carpet. It was only three rooms of carpet also. The stuff in the pan is what I found under the stove when I cleaned the tile.
