Would the editor at ICS / Cleanfax take one look at the name and throw it in the garbage?

When I was getting my machine fixed today a conversation came up about a nitwit who keeps getting published and I mentioned I should start writing articles...

The general consensus was that I would never get published.

If you have something that you need to say that you feel will benefit readers who share your place in our industry, write it. Your best bet would be Cleanfax.

If you'd like to run it by me first, email it.

Gary, Cleanfax did a series of short bits about lots of different Cleaners including a few real whackos like Danny so don't worry - write your piece and send it to Jim - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Only problem is, everything I know I've learned from others... I've heard similar things from so many people I have no clue who to attribute these things to. Would anybody be offended if they thought I was recycling their ideas? A few bits of advice I gave people sounded like they came from SFS, according to Steve, even before I attended. The ideas I put forth were mostly planted by Micah and Trent Richardson, combined with a few things I picked up from previous cleanfax articles, the authors of whom I have never heard of before and can't recall their names...

BTW...

What are the format requirements for an article to cleanfax? Is shorter better? How many words?

Everything that is taught or written has been learned from someone else.

The poet and novelist James Dickey once told his daughter:

"Write what you think. The editing comes later........"

Just find something that is meaningful to you and get it down into a word document (I hate to say "write it down" anymore). If you have something that needs to be said that you feel hasn't been said, and you feel that readers will benefit in some way for having read it, then do it.

Sometimes the fourth time someone reads something it sinks in. Sometimes the phrasing or presentation makes it stick. Saying it again in a different way doesn't hurt.

A good editor will make you look talented. I'm not afraid to send something to Patti Harmon at Cleaning and Restoration; she will either make it better or not use it. I'd guess Jim would do so as well.

All magazines have a right to edit anything you send them though, in any way they feel, so insist on approval of a final draft before the article goes to print.

I started writing for Cleanfax when John Downey started it in 1988 or so (memory fails........). When John Downey sold it, I continued to write for it for a little while, until I got tired of the horrible editing that my articles would recieve from editors who "cut to fit" and left out things that took the sense out of the article.

I only started writing for them again when Jeff Cross took over. Jeff, by the way, is a true editor and a whole lot smarter than his humble manner shows.

And HE makes some stuff that I've been embarrassed to submit look REALLY good.

No DJ name yet. I am trying to brainstorm a bunch of funny DJ names for my friend's wedding. My plan is to introduce myself with a different name each time. I imagine I will need thirty names.
