I was bit in the face when I was 3 or 4. My mustache hides the scar.

Had to put down a dog I tried rescuing. A friend died and nobody would take the dog. Pit bull husky mix. It would dive under the fence to get out and after the third attack my insurance company was going to drop me and nobody would take her.

Once they get the taste of blood they change.

Part of a K9 Search and Rescue Group I belong to. I also do decoy support for Personal Protection Dogs etc. Dogs in this picture are 2 of my dogs American Bulldog/Boxer and GSD. Black dog in front is hero retired police dog GSD. Other dogs on left is Malinois and far right Pitt X.
Basic commands these dogs know besides sit and down are place, seek...in german or dutch, corpa to find the dead, out...very important for working dogs and leave it. Leave it will save you from being dragged when the dog sees a squirrel or whatever. Dogs trained to bite the Out stops the dog from biting. These are the basics and the bare minimum when training working dog breeds.
My dogs also go to the bathroom on command and get water on command. They do many other things.
In virtually every case a dog behavior problem is a Owner...not you Mike/Training problem. We work with dogs that were bred for a purpose and want/need a job. Obviously not your fault either Sam...
Don't get a working breed of dog if you aren't willing to put the time in with the dog...no matter how cute they were in the movie you watched or book you read. Having a dog is a partnership with the dog... your part is you are going to give them at least enough training to live safely in this human world.
Training rules #1 I don't get hurt. #2 The dog doesn't get hurt and #3 We always end the training on a positive note. Training is playing for the dog and should be fun for you as well.
Dog changing after tasting blood is BS, their carnivores and taste blood all the time...they are dogs and they perceive the world as dogs.

Sorry about your accident. I experienced the same circumstances with a Dalmation I had over twenty years ago. Still have the road rash scar on the back of my hand. He wasn't aggressive; just a knucklehead who would bolt after anything.

My last two dogs have been Labs. I'll stick with Labs.

My daughter's Aussie can become aggressive. Vet put her on Prozac a few weeks ago. No indication that it's not working.

When I read stuff like this from all the bad dog experiences I remember I need to count my blessings. Our chocolate Lab ignores dogs, bunnies, people etc when we walk - 99% of the time off leash. Only time she will not obey me to "stay" is if someones looks at her and says something then she'd over there as fast as possible to lick the person to death. She doesn't dig, chew or have any " accidents" whatsoever.

The only bad thing about her is she wants to be at my side nearly all the time. When she's not at my side, she's laying down and staring at me. It actually gets annoying!

This is what happened to me randomly at a Superbowl Party, petting a friend of a friends dog that I mentioned above. I can't believe I found the pic. Was from 2008. People still ask me if I am afraid of dogs after that. Hell no! Freak shit happens. 58 stitches and 2 front chipped teeth. Could stick my tongue through it. Sorry had to post it. Mods can delete it or ban me all together for its grossness. But this wasn't a case of "becareful of my dog it bites". When people at houses tell me that, I DO stay away.

One is a rescue from the pound German Shepherd/Boarder Collie mix Roxie.

She's a little skidish around strangers and has nipped but is very smart and trainable.

The other is Ben, he's killed a bunny a squirrel and a gopher.

The squirrel put up the best fight.

He was leashed and just got a hold of two critters the squirrel he was off leash and chased it down.

My wife said no more dogs and my sons fiancé begged him for a dog, well they got her Ben.

Ben has a lot of energy, and she was hoping for a laid back dog like Roxie.

She got a job a hour away and would kennel Ben at her grandparents. He dug holes and ate holes in beds was nicked name Ben laden.

We walk 3.3 miles in the morning and another miles in the afternoon.

We decided to take Ben while my sons fiancé moved closer to work during the week.

After walking him daily and letting him run my wife has grown to love Ben and he's now a pretty good dog.

When my son broke up with his fiancé we told her we'll keep him.

She knew it was best, because unless your going to walk him everyday 3-4 miles he would go stir crazy.

He's not a lazy persons dog. He now follows me every where and makes groans of excitement for rabbits.

He's a great dog, just like Roxie.

Sorry, Mike. In the Dominican Republic we had a big Rottweiler that while not aggressive simply would not train to a leash. So every walk outside the yard became a test of wills. Sad because we loved walking him...

Yeah....we had a boxer pit bull mix great watch dog she was....and great with kids she would take her head and corral all my grandkids in the kitchen and then sit in the entrance and look up into the other room as to say don't you mess with these toddlers.....but if she saw any other animal she went nuts...she's gone now. Lived a long life
