That stupid sweat shirt reminded me of this old Coit guy ( and a few BBdorks) who would refer to his job as a carpet cleaner as a Craft that could be honed..

Too funny..

We're not building wood boats or guitars by hand here. Just a bunch of shitty businessmen with enough smarts to understand a three or maybe 4 part Pi.

And enough nerve to willinging touch doody and wee wee.

If I could wittle a complete set of chess pieces and I saw Marty wearing that hoody, I'd have to shove the King up his *

to a point...yes its a craft.....what makes it so????

Look around at the competition. As I have said before, I understand what and why my limitations to "expanding" are....HOWEVER, it is also what sets me apart.....and also what causes me to, maybe not do as many jobs as I could (tired of peoples shit) which is where the craftsmanship comes in.....

dont try to tell me how to do my job (craft) just because i make it look easy, doesnt mean it is...

Indeed. As Mike gets away from his roots and enjoys the leisure life more and more, his attitude towards this noble profession will quite naturally transition from Connoisseur to ProCarpet as the monkees perform for him.

  1. Craft
  2. A craft is a pastime or a profession that requires some particular kind of skilled work. ...Wikipedia
Judging by this definition, I'd say what many of us do is a craft, and others, not so much.

I think the key word is how you define "skilled".

Setting up a portable because I'm saving $2.99 an hour insted of running a truckmount to hone my craft....lol...
It takes a craftsman to achieve better results with a porty than anyone around even if they use a dual wand TM. And when that same craftsman uses his more powerful TM he brings that higher skillset and discipline to each job, further improving his craft.

This board seem to be divided between those who think of themselves as lowly "glorified janitors", thus achieving two insults in one fell swoop (They insult the hard working skilled people who do janitorial work and their colleagues,) and those who consider themselves professionals that have something of value to offer their loyal clients.

If this "Janitorialism" came out of being unassuming, gained through years of spiritual practice realizing that we can all be replaced and the wish to keep ourselves grounded and humble I'd say: God bless. Universe bless to be exact.

Personally, I very much doubt that true humbleness is where this 'meekness' comes from. To find out, it may require the help of a professional, highly skilled in the craft of psychology. And many, many costly sessions :winky:

Yes, dear 'janitor heads', some of us offer 'craftsmanship' and some of us don't. It manifests itself in the quality of workmanship, the way we treat our clients and how we do business.

And to avoid confusion I mean craftsmanship not being crafty.

Some guys are total carpet cleaning nazis for sure.
But i wish there was more of them actually. Would make this business a whole lot easier.

Just thinking about some of our local competitors. Have one company that the owner is against sealing grout/stone, yes against it.
Yet cant figure out why he doesnt sell more jobs .... :hopeless:

Yeah I'm one of them, its all done in sarcasm.
After about 25k hours in cleaning throughout my life I moved into other subjects. Paid my dues for sure.

Sorry if it offends you or anyone else...

I assume that to be the "sarcasm" you were referring to?

In all craftsy honesty, the art of running a successful (profitable) one or 40 truck company takes far more hone-able skill than that of applying the proper amount of well formulated pre sprays and running a suck mop.

Its like when I did construction. Any retard druggie could frame a house, but only the few could do beautiful stain grade finish work. When you are a rug snob, upholstery specialist I would call it a craft. Randy with his rug id is a craft. Jim the upholstery guru definitely a craft. If it wasn't for guys like them there would be many more toasted rugs and upholstery.

when it's taken to the next level, agreed

But the industry average cleaner just slings a wand, a shitty hand tool on herculons and maybe a SX7 on ceramics.
Can't ID a rug or stone, probably thinks all Berbers are olefins and goes through 3 to 4 5 gallons stock jugs a day.

and goes to facebook to talk to his kind.

3 - 4 Gallon jugs a day..... Wow...... That is a lot of concentrate.

I probably do a lot of stupid newbie things still. I have never used that much chemical before. That's crazy stuff. Probably do over apply shampoo a bit still. It gets tricky here becuase we get 35, 40, even 45 or 46 degree Celcius days with little humidity. Adding too much more water without adding some more chemical makes the shampoo too dilute to work effectively so I kind of feel stuck. Using more solution at the recommended dilution.

Mike,

My craft is meeting or exceeding my customers expectations. When I was a teen it was cutting the neighbors grass, delivering newspapers on time, bagging groceries etc. I worked as a carpenter through senior high and cleaned up many a filthy basement. Running a successful service company requires you to be able to multitask and think on the run. There are many college educated professionals that can not earn the hourly rate that we do. Take pride in the services you offer and get paid for it, that's why we all do what we do.

While it may be over the top to call it a "craft"'I don't consider it a dishonorable or unimportant job. I also would say that there is a lot to learn up front. Everything you would instinctively do, is the wrong thing. You need to learn the right thing. Then... You have to learn to not just -do- the right thing but do it well.

There is skill in this work.
