It was so much easier when Robin and Lindsay took all the phone calls and answered all my questions.
For the record, I put much more blame on a new management company that promised way more than they could deliver. Tony and the rest of the board just believed.

Including how he was taught how to tan snake hides in darkest Afrika by the Afrikaans and the African natives.
I forget his native name, Mgwambo or some such thing.

I think Tony worked even hard then I during MF.
His testing took a huge effort on his part. He was busy with it all day long for three days steady.
It added a lot to the event and every one enjoyed being part of it.
He also stepped up to the plate with his Crayola demo and had a gang of cleaners hanging over him for hours.
I also want to thank Bob Foster, Bryan Luddy and Paul Budnick for being Dr.Von Hide's nurses.
Great job guys!!!!

His humble beginning…
In the first half of the 20th Century a young lad named Tony lived in that faraway land known as the Dark Continent -no, not Busch Gardens!- in what is now called "Zimbabwe." Tony spent so much time in the veldt with the natives that his first language was Chirabaraba. The Africans called him Harranje (Chirababa word for magician) after seeing him catch and pick up a deadly snake with his bare hands. It was a harmless snake, but to them all snakes were cursed, poisonous 'skellum'. They fled screaming, but the 'skellum' fascinated "Harranje". He would catch them and keep them in boxes and would sit and look at the ornate patterns of each snake while playing an African flute he'd made of reeds from the nearby crocodile infested, Limpopo River.
Trained by the M'dala…
Harranje wanted to find more snakes so he would head out on his pony into the bush where the snakes abounded. One day while riding out in the bush he spotted one of the old African M'dalas carrying off two of the most beautiful snakes he had ever seen. Young Harranje approached him; the native smiled at Harranje and asked why a boy his age was out in the bush. Harranje told him he loved catching snakes. The native asked him what he did with the snakes. Harranje said he would just watch them. The M'dala, named Tafawa Bal'ewa, chuckled and told Harranje he would show him what he did with snakes. Harranje followed Tafawa back to a thatched hut by the Limpopo. Inside the smoky hut there were snake skins everywhere. Harranje's initial apprehension quickly melted into awe. Harranje asked Tafawa if he would teach him how to make the beautiful snake skins. He told Harranje that being younger and faster he could catch more snakes than him. "You bring me the snakes and I will show you how to skin them and turn them into beautiful hides," he said. Harranje's education was about to begin. For nearly 10 years Harranje would visit Tafawa, bringing snakes and learning how to create leather hides. Before he died, Tafawa told Harranje he had been a good student and could teach him no more.
The journey begins…
Tafawa gave him his new name Harranje Mutare that translates loosely to "Harry Hides." From that day forward Harranje became Harry Hides. Harry left Zimbabwe soon after and began his life of travel. Imitating herds of wildebeest, he wandered for ten years through 60 countries. In each country he made a point of learning from local craftsmen about beautiful hides of their region. Harry migrated to the U.K. then to Montreal, and finally settled in the wilds of Manitoba. The windswept plains of Manitoba reminded him of his native country. In each country he had searched for the local Tafawa Bal'ewa. In other words, he wanted to continue perfecting his craft. He knew Tafawa would like that. While few people lived in Manitoba, it was a paradise for wild animals. Harry learned to work with sealskins, elk, deer, buffalo and moose hides. Harry worked with all of these hides and later expanded into automobile interiors, furnishings, clothing, books and saddles. Harry would visit the great museums to see what the ancient craftsman had created out of leather.

Creating beautiful leather goods is a solitary craft and Harry's thoughts would always drift back to Tafawa. Harry wondered if Tafawa would be proud of his work. Harry knew Tafawa would want Harry to share his knowledge with others. Harry decided it is time to honor Tafawa in the only way he can. Harry Hides has developed a leather course that includes cleaning, repairing, and restoring all types of leather. The secrets of Tafawa Bal'ewa and many others as passed down to Harry can be yours. You can almost see Tafawa smiling.

I've found little time to stop by here since getting involved in the IICRCA, and I do one percent of what Tony does.
Call me naive, since it really was shocking to meet so many people involved in an organization only for the ego boost, that are willing to screw things up to protect the two bucks they can make on the side by screwing things up, and will tell you how righteous they are about screwing things up.
Frustrating for me at the one percent level. I don't know how Tony handles it.

He tries to not meddle, but also tries to keep an eye on everything. Visit a board meeting/committee event/instructor's symposium/certification council meeting and you'll see how much is in motion all of the time.

I find it hard to believe that he can't find some time to leave a comment here or on the Carpet Cleaners Facebook to encourage more people and to let the little people know what is going on.
At times I have felt like an anorexic mushroom, kept in the dark and fed nothing ............................................ not even
, because no-one will talk.I feel they need a spokesperson that WILL correspond with the people that pay their salaries.
I know I'm once more going to be unpopular, but hey, been there, done that before.

I imagine the corporate structure/bylaws are part of the problem. Its not a dictatorship, he cant walk in this morning and do whatever he chooses.
Envision his job like herding cats...
Every meeting gets derailed into some stoopid argument over a hyper-technical detail or 2 people that just hate each.

In my 32 years of watching/participating/loving/hating/and sometimes trying to avoid organizations in this industry, I have learned one very important lesson. People who stand up on tables and shout and point at someone else and say they have an agenda, always have an agenda themselves. Plus they often find it ain't so easy at the top of the mountain when they push the previous person off the mountain.
That being said, I try to follow something my dad told me a long time ago when dealing with people in organizations and politics - assume good intent - even when you don't always agree with someone.

I know this will only muddy the water, but the IICRC employs a paid president for most of the administrative duties. The chairman of the board is someone who "chairs" board meetings, which in many ways is "keeping order" (much more like what was said previously about "herding cats"). To be fair, the chairman is a member of the executive committee, and does have input and authority with the executive committee to an extent, but not as much as the board as a whole does.
The president, Patrick Winters, "serves at the pleasure of the board", but has some autonomy so that he isn't micromanaged and can get things done...or can be held responsible for not getting things done as it were.
Tony is a volunteer, not a paid executive.

If I were Tony reading all this I would probably get the feeling that nothing I said would make any difference, that the group had already made up it's mind. I'm sure my comments have contributed to that.
Don't over complicate this. We don't need this parasitic org. Simply ignore them. Why is it that carpet cleaners seem to need to form a group with leaders? Strange just like "Bikers" who love to say how independent they are and rebels.............but they need to belong to bikers groups.
