Those who write Business regulations should have to have owned a business. In my opinion there is a distinct bias against owners, who are perceived as rich, idle and able to pay for every generous benefit imposed on them (for the poor oppressed proletariat).

When they saw what was being taken out of their checks for taxes, they cried like wounded hounds. So I switched them to independent contractors. To get a reliable employee, you have to pay them well and make them feel that they are an important part of the company. It's difficult to offer benefits, especially health insurance in The US but you may be able to add them to a family health plan. The problem with a lot of small businesses and owner/ops like me, is that we are not charging enough to cover employee costs. I hesitate sometimes to sell protector, I turn down tile cleaning jobs sometimes because it's a hassle, I don't sell deodorizer, unless it's correcting a problem, etc. Companies like Coit or SS have no problem doing any of those and they pay their employees well. It's a different mind set. I know I am too picky.

You don’t have to offer healthcare for under 50 employees. But, for someone that I want to keep, I will negotiate that benefit, or anything else that might help. But the rest, there’s no option. Taxes, WC, GL, UEI, whatever. But, all of that beats grinding at 69 or being broke and 69. Even herding cats, beats grinding!!

Get 5 gal of D foam your portable will choke. I had the same type of job 20 yrs past. To many years of shampoo. My truckmount could barley keep up. Very hard to adjust to carpet to clean. I even used my RX 20 with two jets blocked. Had to walk away from that one. but I learned from that. jz.

The only thing that holds me back from hiring is all the California compliance bullshit I have to deal with. More insurance, Workman Comp, payroll, Sick leave, jury duty, overtime, increased vehicle insurance. on an on. Good grief.

Some good advice here. It may be that you'll just have to get into it and learn what bits and pieces you'll need to make a job like this easier. (Or just turn it into a series of smaller jobs.)

May I ask why it has to be done with a portable? We may be able to figure a way around that.

All depends on how well their vacuuming program is.

If you have to remove built up encap sludge their vacuum program doesn't matter. Almost no encap residue is removed by vacuum cleaner. I've seen carpet with enough build up that you could knock on the carpet and it sounded like wood. The time invested in removing it would cost more than replacement, so the carpet was replaced.

When you have a 2 man crew you'll be able to accomplish your work in much more timely manner. It's going to take at the very least a year before I would consider allowing them to go out on their own and probably longer than that. It's nice to send your guy out on his own, earn your business a k or better while you're watching Jerry Springer in your underwear at home. When you get the right person, treat them like gold. My guy gets a good wage , medical paid for and other things. Some of the bigger jobs he takes on by himself I'll pay him 25%. Good help makes you money not cost you money.

That is the issue, but not the way you are thinking. The last thing a business owner needs is a gang of do-gooders dipping into his wallet, with the assumptive premise that he is cheap bully.

There is a balance to be found, but regulations have a habit of increasing.

All the jobs are on the 3rd, to 19th floor of a series of ‘green’ buildings. There is no TM access within 300’ of the front door, let alone up to the 3rd, let alone the 19th....
It’s all porty, all the time for me now on evenings and weekends.... I’m going to get to know my Monsoon very well....
I am also going to see how well it’s cleans upholstery. One account has asked if we can also clean 250 office chairs....

Keep in mind, I run a 47 blower, OVERSPUN by 500 rpms, and run 2.5 hose from the tank....
It’s got suction, could be improved... but, the 220 psi pump doesn’t cut it... NOT ENOUGH FLUSH ON A REGULAR STOKE.... a guys got to SLOW DOWN big time coming from a TM, and that means time, which means money.....
It’s needs more balance....

Also-- I highly recommend Hydramaster's 2-inch Evolution wand for superior extraction with a porty.
It also had a wide head which will help with increased production.

The 3 flow gives you about 150 psi. Going to a 4 flow will drop you to 100 psi.

Dump the pump, go tap pressure with as much 3/8" hose as you need. Better heat better flush.
Bigger jets if you can, six flow at least.

Anyone remember that machine that John Downey was using? It plumbed water right to a drag wand and pumped it out again right there as well. Might be the best tool for this type of work if they're still available.
