Pet pampering is in our favor of course, and I'm all about serving the public by keeping their homes not smelling like Shadow or Skipper...

But this is insane (and a vet I know agrees...)

My dad's foofoo dog has been drinking bottled water and eating Hill's CD/boiled chicken since he was a year or two old because of stones and the vet bills that accompanied them. None since so there might be something to it. The little bastard has already bested the high end life expectancy by two years although he is feeble af now.

I'd have traded him for a lower maintenance dog......those cans of CD "Urinary Care" are like 4 bucks a piece (luckily he is small)

I heard that drinking out of the toilet is far better for pets

My vet's response:

"Cats are metabolically really weird animals. We used to think cats were really sensitive to things in their diets, which would cause them to form crystals in their urine.

Turns out, it not generally diet. If a cat is under stress, it can have a weird cortical response which lowers the pH of the urine and allows struvite crystals to form. Not a big deal in female cats, but male cats have a much longer and narrower urethra and the crystals and resulting mucus can cause a urethral obstruction than can cause an immediate and life threatening crisis.

In short, water is not a big deal. Tap water is fine. High strung, anxious kitties could benefit from a low acid diet. I give you permission to forward this to any of your friends."

Exactly.

People spend a fortune on pets, and even if you exclude deodorizing, those furry family members get things dirty, and we need to be grateful for them.

To be fair, I buy bottled water. When I was a kid I drank out of a garden hose.
Always say, "if it wasn't for kids and dogs, we'd be out of business". I buy bottled water for when I'm working or outdoors but we're blessed with great drinking water here, garden hose or not.
