A customer brought in a 34 HP Kohler with a problem I remember.
Rear Main Bearing caught on fire. Engine was 4 years old with many dents in the oil filter .
I checked the dual belts between the engine and blower.
Tension was slightly under the Gates recommendation.
Oil was slinging out the rear and caught fire.
Pulled the rear cover off the engine. Main bearing was badly scored and overheated.
Oil was in very bad shape and damage appeared to be caused by low oil level, and starvation of rear main.
Replaced the Rear Main Bearing, Timing gear on cam, and cover gasket.
Polished crank . Total repair cost $120 parts and $140 labor.
Engine has been operating about a week now with no issues.
Have to wonder about the "top mechanic" in Kansas who said previous engine with similar damage, was not repairable.
