Kohler engine starter

When I hit the key my starter will not engage. If I jumper the posts on the solenoid it will turn over and start.
Could it be the key switch or the solenoid that is bad?

What kind of condition are your battery cables in? I bought a whole new starter on ebay for $53, works perfect.

It depends on which terminals you jumped.

If it was the two largest terminals, then you need a new solenoid.

If it was the small start terminal, then it is the switch or wiring.

We have both of them.

Thanks Larry. It was the two large posts I was jumping ( I figured it was the solenoid but not positive).
Thanks for the offer but my wife is a DM for Advance Auto Parts so I had her bring one home.

when you touched the 2 tall bolts, youre bypassing the bad solenoid .. easy fix

Well, that didn't work. New solenoid and I still have to jumper the posts to get it to crank.

How is your negative battery cable grounded? Kohler requires that the negative battery cable be connected to the engine block. Kohler has denied alot of starter warranty claims for this reason.

Pull the female spade terminal off of the starter and put the end of a test light into it and turn the key over; if it doesn't light up, then you have a bad switch or a loose connection somewhere. Also make sure the female spade fits tightly onto the starter spade connection.

My guess is that you are not getting power down to the solenoid.

Put this on as a back-up, it will bypass the key switch and the solenoid.
