Legend SE HX removal to clean

So today I noticed some really black oil like residue down buy the catalytic converter side of my HX system. At first I thought it was a oil leak but no way is my oil that black so after a little closer look, yes it is coming out of the HX system.

Back in Florida David from PC was telling us that the heating system should be cleaned, I think he may be right LOL.
I suspect my HX system is probably coated with soot as I have never cleaned it. My heat is also not as good as it used to be.

Have any of you ever pulled a HX system out of a Legend SE ? If so how hard and how much time should I set aside to get this out and cleaned and put back in?

I've never done it but saw one apart at my distributors. It looks like a weekend project to me.

3 steps removal, disassemble Cat HE & clean, I reinstall.

I'm not familiar enough with the Legend but on the Performers the Cat HE is down low and tight. You might need a set of crows feet wrenches.

Should be pretty easy.. I have never worked on a Legend, and it is a bit different then my Peak or Apex. All it is, is like 6 7/16 bolts(per HX changer) and some hose clamps.. I would say the time is in cleaning them out real good. Let them soak in a degreaser, and rinse, and repeat..

My favorite cleaner is Judsons "Gosh", it is the best I have found to clean out HX'ers..

With the gosh, use a trigger sprayer to spray the crap out of it(let it soak), then have hot water in a 5 gallon bucket and dunk it repeatedly.. The water will be black.

I have these type also, but I have another one on the other side that is a SS tube kinda looks like my SS Devastator, it is hooked to the exhaust header pipe. I am pretty clear this weekend I think I'm gonna take a shot and attempt to take it out, I know it is coated, I will take pics of the process, may come in handy for some other people

The boy Jake who started cleaning in the conference didn't believe in dry strokes.. lol.. He also jumped out of a moving car too, so he's not playing with a full deck..

As for pulling it out...it's pretty easy. I think it'll take a few hours to pull out, clean, and put it back in

Okay I'm a little embarrassed to say this but My temps are only peaking around 180* and it takes a while to get up to that. I can tell you all that the PC L hx system is designed to honestly put out @140 continuous....it never goes below that....well in the state that it is in now anyways.
I'm not saying it wont get up to cycle stage but that ONLY happens now when a 6 foot someone calls me while I'm in the middle of cleaning.

What does happen when it does get up to that kinda heat, now that I'm thinking about it is the thick black residue always seem to appear on the bottom of my machine back at the exhaust side of the hx where the cat is located.

I have just not had the time to take her down, but I just can't put it off anymore, I have a call in to a company to order a new engine, I asked them what is the biggest I can put without mods to the frame...maybe a 25hp as of now I have a 20 hp. Monday I should know and make the order.

I know it is gonna be black inside cause my motor has to be using oil, it isn't bad you never see the white/blue smoke like a car does but I think that may be because hx builds up moisture on the coils when first started...my guess is that the burnt oil has probably just stuck to all the coils, what makes me think this is if I stick my finger into the exhaust port I can get this thick black tar like residue and it is thick so I suspect major build up.
I can go almost my full hours between oil changes without adding oil but still 5200+ hours is a long freaking time.

I looked at my manual and it LOOKS like the way to do it is to PULL the blower and slide the HX system out towards the back of the unit. Pics will come, wish me luck.

I have checked that it seems to be pulling good vac on the intake side of the air pump so I think it is still good.

Tom I wonder that the life expectancy of that Catalytic HE is?
Hopefully its not dead but it could explain the lack of heat.

It's designed to reburn the exhaust gases. With no ignition source it's just blowing exhaust over the coils.

Heat drop 30-40 degrees??? Instead of 210 degrees 170-180???
