I owned a carpet cleaning business on Maui for years. It was really good in some ways, really bad in others. Houses were like half a million for a piece of junk then, probably at least double now. People are seriously crazy there. Like, absolutely insane. I'm from Indiana and people there are mostly decent and act normal. The parking was extremely tight everywhere, tourists would call me yelling at me for running a truckmount while theyre trying to vacation. Working for the ultra wealthy homeowners, if they were present, was the worst. Have to be extremely careful everywhere, and all their furniture is easy to ruin and difficult to clean.
The great parts were amazing weather 24/7. Sunshine all the time. And most of the work was empty condos. I would get sent lists by condo managers of several places they needed done and when to do them. Also, most carpets there were not very dirty. You would clean the same condos once or twice a year, and they were just grimey from sunscreen, occasional spills, and some sand. There was also a ton of work and me and every other guy on the island stayed too busy to keep up. Never had to worry about having enough jobs.
In the midwest, you might clean a nice house thats fairly clean in the morning, and then next you're at a low income apartment that was smoked in, with dog pee, bed bugs, 50 red kool aid stains, gum stuck to the carpet, and 20 degrees outside. Lots of good and bad in both places.
