Vacuum, apply wool specific cleaner with hand pump up, clean with SS UPH, high acid rinse, water set to cool, force dry with fans...

Masterblend soil lifter, medium to high heat (the sheep are dead they dont care) scrub with hand buffer if needed, hand tool rinse, encap acid rinse.

I'd be more concerned about not marking the wood

I would begin with a check of how they are woven and how well attached to the staircase. Some machine woven will wants to shrink if it can. Some velvet style weaves will loose yarn due to agitation and vacuum.

In most cases, Sierra Clean suggestions should work fine. Wool Perfect prespray and Wool Zone rinse.
