Matched Belt sets

who sales them. I was looking around and I don't see any. For those wondering it gives me peace of mind having them. Only at 75 hrs but they won't go bad on my shelf. Already ordered a case of motorcraft filters, 2.5 gallons of pump oil. More to come. It's just how I roll.

Most of the belt manufacturers are moving away from matched sets. They say manufacturing tolerances have gotten good enough that all belts in a series will match. For instance, from a Gates document:

Gates innovated a change in 1980. Belt molds were
re-machined, manufacturing procedures redesigned,
new measuring devices developed, and closer
attention paid to manufacturing variability through
statistical process control (SPC). The Gates V80
matching program produces classical and narrow
product with tighter-than-RMA tolerances. All belts in
this system are in the same tolerance range. Any V80
belt of a given length runs with any other V80 belt of
the same cross-section and construction. V80 belts
are:

Hi-Power® – A, B, C, D, E
Super HC® – 3VX, 5VX, 5V, and 8V
Tri-Power® – AX, BX, CX

If you do still want a matched set, they will probably be a special-order item.

Most belts I get from Gates are stamped with the same number. Generally 50.

Thats news to me. The last belts I installed weren't matched and they were different sizes. You could see after tensioning they were different. I pulled them and installed matched belts from my supplier. He sold out and the new guys not carrying them.

Gates 3VX & 5VX series belts we use do match up well.

However a good distributor should know how to get even closer tolerances on length.

spc is a program that tracks the tolerance of the parts being produced.
