Sometimes, small carpet cleaning companies and owner/operators do take things too personally. These days, I look at the large companies, bait and switchers, etc with gratitude. As an owner/operator, I get to pick up the pieces and yes I charge piece by piece. For example, a couple of years ago, I was referred to a job where a lady had hired a carpet cleaner, who when on her doorstep, explained because her carpets were so heavily soiled, rather that the $59 she was quoted, it was now going to be $150.00. She had the good sense to tell him to fook off and called a local dry cleaner where I had some advertising. I did the job, straight in and out, less than 70 ft of hose, just used my regular prespray, no stain treatment needed and her carpets came out beautiful in less than half an hour. My minimum is $120 and the carpets came out so nice she wanted protector applied. Total job was $180 and I now do all the work in the townhouse complex. I had another customer who normally would use me but was persuaded by a slick salesman that his company could do the job a lot cheaper. She had a newborn child and the guy made her watch a 15 min. video on why she needed deodorizer. When he left, there were a couple of black rings by her bathroom door. She called to complain and they said that was a pre-existing condition. She finally called me (somewhat sheepishly) and the rings were from the dirty pressure hose. rinsed out easily. Her large family are now all my satisfied customers. So, guys, keep it coming, I am building my business on your mistakes. Thank you very much.
