With all the snow this year, I will be getting a lot of smelly basements. Ussually people suck it up themselves and blow a fan on it untill dry. When I show up to clean what ever, they ask if I can help with there smelly basement. I have been using restored from magic wand or microban. Is there anything else out there that works well in this situation.

I try to talk them into replacing the pad in affected areas and recommend to they invest in a dehumidifier.

As far as a spray product goes I would go with Sporicidin or Shockwave. If it's a damp basement a little dehumidifier would help.

A dehumidifier should run in a basement from spring thru fall. Works wonders for musty smell.

i dont think a topical disinfectant will reach the problem. it may smell better for a couple days but it will start to stink again.

Almost walked out of an insurance agents home today because he asked me to clean a bunch of mold out of his carpet so his wife would quit complaining that it was giving her headaches and so he wouldn't have to replace it.

That's one guy who should know better.

Don't worry hoody, I took the stance of ignorance. This could be mold, appears to be mold, if it happened that this was mold and we (fill in the blank) there might be some liability due to the possibility of maybe and blah blah covered my butt.

But off the record. It was mold. It looked like mold, smelled like mold, and it was from an un-treated water damage.

Mold and Mildew go hand in hand. The only way to tell in its dangerous is to bring in an environmental hygienist. That’s not an option with that average homeowner that is looking for a quick fix. You could always tell them you have an obligation to file a repot with the health department if they don’t follow your recommendations. It’s no way to do business but there are lots of restoration guys using scare tactics to get mold work.

doug,

thats what ive been told.mold is growing so it has no odor where mildew is deteriorating or breaking down something which gives off gasses.
