You can get a tram pass and get almost everywhere on the new part of vergas. A rental is good if you want to go downtown or out of the city, say to visit the Hoover damn or something else.

Most of the time, I get by without a car. I get there Sunday and will stay at the Hilton. I am teaching a class not far from there and arranged for a ride. The Hilton is off the ‘strip’, but it has many restaurants and other stores. You could easily end up not leaving the hotel. I have been to Las Vegas many times and do not have a desire to see the other sights, but they are worth seeing. On the major boulevard, called the ‘Strip’, the hotels have attractions that are worth seeing. For example TRESSURE ISLAND has a body of water with wooden ships and pirates. Every hour or so, they do a skit. When I have needed to go to a special store, like Best Buy, I found it easy to get a taxi. A car would be nice and parking is generally free at other hotels. It depends upon what you want to do and see.
By the way, I live in Frisco.

Hey Michael!...I usually do not rent a car unless other side trips are planned.

Get a cab to the Hilton...It's usually $12 plus tip to the Hilton...once there, get the three day monorail pass...that takes you everywhere on the strip...or share a cab with other folks who are heading the same way as you.

I don't care for the shuttle...you can get a round trip...airport to hotel and back for ten bucks...because they stop at every hotel between the airport and the Hilton...sometimes it takes an hour!

Plan on a lot of walking. The monorail runs behind the casinos and stops every few, and the strip hotel/casinos can cover several blocks. Even if you park a car in the hotel lot you're still going to walk a ways to get where you're going in the hotel.

I cracked up at the guys that stayed at the hotel next to the Hilton and took cabs back and forth.

If you plan on just staying at the hotel then don't. We are renting one cause we plan to do some site seeing. Last time there we didn't rent one, that tram is not worth it to me.

Take the tram from Hilton to Osheas on the strip, you won't need to go anywhere else the whole time you're there.

Generally there are other conventions happening at the same time. I would try to avoid the typical end of day outbound rush from the convention center. I like the taxi's because you can have a few drinks and not worry about a DUI. Also the strip can be a pain in the ass to drive and you may have to walk farther than you want/think if you are self-parking. Not only at the Hilton, but other Hotels/Casino's you may want to visit. Taxi takes you right to the front.
