So, my friend who was all excited to work flaked on me. I tried calling and texting her an hour before the job and 5 minutes before I left she texted me that she was up all night with a migraine and had just woke up.
Then she had the balls to say that if I needed help for the rest of the week let her know and she would help.
Should I give her a chance?
To be fair, she did offer to clean for free today as it was the give back job, but is this a sign of things to come?

I have used temp agencies in the past and have had no problems. They pay all the taxes and wc. If they get a negative report on an employee, that person goes to the bottom of the pile again or so I'm told.

But....what if that negative report was something like them having stolen something from a customer or what not.
I know the temp agency is responsible for whatever happens, however the damage it can do to your company name is not something they will handle or be able to repair.

It's always a gamble but no different than hiring someone yourself. the agency I use is called Labor Ready and they do criminal records search on all their guys. If you want to hire the guy they send on a permanent basis, you pay $500.00 as a finders fee.

That is true....
My buddy just sent me a link to use for background checks too. I know that hiring anyone is a gamble, but like someone a]said above, you always have it in the back of your mind, wondering why this guy is in the position to be having to use a temp agency.
However, when the economy went south so did a lot of good peoples lives....I would love to find a solid worker who has a drama free life (as much as possible) and maybe we can help each other get back on our feet.

I used to work for a temp agency. I didn't want full time work then, bumming around, doing different things. I liked the variety of work I got. Had an amazing job at a lumber mill once for 6 weeks testing lumber for strength. They wanted to hire me full time and I turned them down. Big mistake. Union job, good pay, I would be retired by now, (almost) but then I wouldn't be my own boss like I am now. Uh Oh, did my wife hear that?

Let her know you don't want to damage your relationship. If she really wants to help you, you'd be glad to have her. However if she doesn't, its no problem. You don't want her to feel obligated, your friendship is worth more to you.

Good idea. I will talk to her and be frank about my concerns. Her friendship means more to me than her working for me. I want to be able to have her work with me as her husband who is younger than me has had two heart attacks and they are dear friends. He doesn't need the stress of going back to one income. And as I said earlier, her and I work great together and she knows all about the cleaning products so.....I'm just going to talk with her.

Genny has had a couple people all excited to work then miss the first day. One disappeared completely another was very undependable for several months and is now done.

No matter what happens keep looking for the next replacement.

I would check with the job she quit. Not a great way to start no show no call.

I think her expectations and yours are different. Hurt feelings come from expectations. You expected her to work and she is expecting to help you. Helping you and working for you are way way different. You need to lay that out. Either she works for you or she don't. Helping you out means its her choice so she has no skin in the game other then leaving a friend hanging. Which for most would be more important then a paycheck but if she is ok baling on a friend how will she be as an employee if she isn't even a decent friend?

Her and I are going to have a talk, but I have run into a better situation.
My stepbrother is going to move in with us for a while and work with me and help me around the house. He has worked for us in the past and is a good, hard worker. He has taken the top spot in the chain.

I am glad your going to have help Kellie. I am so impressed and humbled by how your handling everything. At least publically. I am sure you have times that you want to just curl up in a ball and cry and no one would blame you. But you don't. You just get up and get after it. I am so so proud of you! If no one else tells you today just know I think you are amazing

Thank you John....I was a blubbering mess last night...lol. Trust me, I am not handling this perfectly but God knows I am trying!
Some things are falling apart at the moment, I have no choice but to just let them go for now. The most important thing is to figure out what is wrong with my hubby's heart and get it ticking right, and pick up the pieces from there.
