OSR as an additive?

New customer had a whole house scheduled to be cleaned and they gave me the garage code to get in. As soon as I opened the door the smell of dog was overwheming. they did indicate that there were three spots in the Family Room that needed to be treated.

I did treat the three spots with OSR which worked well. Then thought that maybe if I added some to my prespray that it may help with the odor overall as I clean the carpet. Ive tried just about everything else for general odor removal but nothing worked well and was very temporary at best.

So I go clean the first and second floors and return the next day to clean the basement. When I opened the door that day THERE WAS NO DOG ODOR! I could not believe it!

I also noticed that adding the OSR made the cleaning easier. Soil was removed quicker and it turned out better.

So I continued to use about a 1/3 scoop of OSR on tough jobs. One day I read the label which says “Avoid breathing vapors/mist of this product” Yikes! I like the idea of adding something that makes cleaning better, but not at the risk of my health!

Is there something that works similar but more safe to use?

I’m glad you like it. I wish you well. I’ve found another way that works well for me but it makes kenny and Mikey uncomfortable when I mention it. As a result of their discomfort, I mention Saigercide and Soap Daddy’s Bio-8 every chance I get.

Releasit Encap-HydrOx will also get you there. Similar concept to OSR. Encap-HydrOx is non-hazardous to work with. It is very powerful on organic soil conditions and browning. It can freshen the carpet and break down organic-based odor sources, like dog smell. Spike it with Odorcide too if you like, and you can bring odor abatement to an even higher level.

The vapors created when sodium percarbonate (the active ingredient in OSR and similar odor treatments, as well as cleaning boosters) can be an irritant to the respiratory tract. This is most likely to occur when you are mixing buckets of it for flooding urine contaminated carpet. At the very low levels you are using it as a cleaning additive, it's likely not much of an issue. The larger the particle size you are spraying, the less atomization and vapor that you'll create.

The same goes for the solvent additives and surfactants in your prespray.

In a perfect world, cleaners would wear a mask, such as were used during the covid crisis, to prevent droplet inhalation.

Few cleaners prefer such apparel.

Sodium percarbonate is recognized as having antimicrobial properties, and oxidation also breaks down proteins, such as those found in urine residues. This is also why chlorine dioxide is becoming popular for some urine treatment applications.

OSR is a great additive when it comes to dog odors, so yes, when you get a job with mostly organic soiling, OSR is needed to be a part of the ingredients mixed in your sprayer. I'm a fan of too much is better than not enough, so I probably would've put 2-3 scoops in the HF when I mixed it with. hot water.

Just keep in mind you need your temp at the tm off when you spray it. I'm sure you already knew that though

no I didnt! I usually run about 180-190. Why would I need the temp off?

no I didnt! I usually run about 180-190. Why would I need the temp off?

The hotter the water, the less it pulls the chemical in the dema to properly mix it. I like to keep it around 140-160 when I'm spraying. I understand if you're switching from wand to spray, it's hard to do, but when you're doing your initial treatment on the carpet, it's good to bleed out the high temp water before you spray with the HF.

If you are running ANY peroxide based cleaner through your HF, whether powder, or liquid, you WILL blow the seals on the spray gun, and it will leak….(kinda like old man drippy d…,never mind).

Probably exactly what caused the problem you were inquiring about it on your other thread.

Yep, thats what happened. But now I just dont close the cap tight on the jug so the pressure does not build up.

If you are not rinsing the dema valve out of your HF after work each day , and you keep using said product, it will just keep happening if you continue to use peroxide based products.
I keep a hard, 2 gallon jug filled with plain water for just this.
I’m my last job, I pull the HF setup out of the container, put the acorn and short hose into the plain water, and spray for about a minute into my vac line…
Haven’t had an issue since doing this…

The peroxide will continue to eat away @ the seals and steel inside otherwise overnight.

i did that every week but looks like I will have to do it every day. From the photo it looks like you are spot on.
