I replied out in the open, above in this thread. I agreed with the blocking comments, but would have done what you did, given your local rug specialist. Our closest are hours away.
Years ago a similar smaller rug was fixed by a steam press. The shop owner has since passed, and his secret with him. I suspect some starching agent was used, but I'd hesitate to say.
