Ripples in carpet

That much glycol would take weeks to dry on its own, you have to get most of it out first, and prepare them for multiple visits.

For future reference does anyone have suggestions on how to remove oily substances from a carpet without using solvents?

Diatomaceous earth. Pour a thick layer on the back of the carpet and it will suck up the oil.

The carpet should have been pulled back before any cleaning attempt.

Well I went back 5 days ago. The ripples had reduced a lot, but were not totally gone. I re-stretched the carpet, no obvious pattern distortion. I didn't have to take that much slack out, so even if the carpet does pull together a bit more, it shouldn't be an issue. The customer was happy with the result and I haven't heard from them since.

In future when I come across these type of spills, I will be getting a signature from the customer waiving responsibility on my part for any further damage or else I won't be doing the job
