Would you three outstanding members be willing to orchestrate the portable Shoot out at MF5?

Couple hours each day running comparisons and taking notes and pictures.

If the Mytee wins John says he'll give you each a free model of your choice.

Or a MB bumper sticker and a hefty pat on the back.

with Ron's attention to detail and obsessive compulsive disorder, he'd a be an excellent choice for team leader.
(as long as his team mates don't KILL him for having to measure water with an eye dropper instead of bucket... )

I am curious with the outcome of the shootout, as I will be in the market for a portable upgrade soon. Thanks to all for doing this!

forget about the performance numbers

the contest should consist of a timed event,

you have to unload it out of the trunk of a car,

wheel it across a 100 foot grass court yard

carry it up 2 flights of stairs

wheel it through an apartment unit to the balcony and drop it over the edge

whichever one still works and has the least amount of visual damage wins

speaking of NANCYS

fRed, glad you're back

was it the midol treatments that helped most, or membership to Curves?

Wasn't that a scene from the Mikey/Jay Leno movie on ***?

suggestions for criteria/specs we should be looking at?

might i suggest a few , Ron?
(BTW, I really do have supreme confidence in you)
Just don't make it into rocket science.

first and foremost, water/solution recovery.
IMO, it's critical you use the same wand, hoses and operator for the portys in the evaluation.
all set at same psi and tested on same dry carpet
measured water in, measured/timed stokes done in exactly as possible the same way (that's why I think the same wand operator is needed)
measure water recovered.
personally, I think the psi should be set at 300.
cause think dudes are idiots that blow 400 and up PSI with a porty anyway

ease of use..ie fill/ drain, maneuverability in and out of van and up stairs

ease of service when repairs are needed

those would be good starters for "practical" use evaluations

Hard floor test would be quick way to eliminate weaker machines. Start out at 100FT using spinner, glided wand or Gekko style wand, pour measured water out of measuring cup like 36oz into a new oil drip pan, make timed passes, remaining water can be instantly seen, sponged up, dried with paper towel, and both squeezed into measuring cup. Simpler to recover water, eliminates pump and operator error. Greenie mentioned some cfm meters might be used. I'd like to see on the winning machines a truck mount external filter hooked up and the portys internal filters removed to see air flow difference.

rented rug doctor?

possibly more.

Is this a new one like all the machines or your old worn out one?

Thanks Mike
COuld you ask that each company/person entering a portable provide a basic spec sheet, ie vac motors, pump and capacity, fresh water and recovery capacity, etc.

I know some have adjustable pressure, some don't. Larry suggested running at 300psi but not all these machines will have that capability.
Will there be a 12" Greenhorn there? That would make a good porty wand though not all of them run 2" hose either.
Lots of variation.

I can't stress enough the need for "simple" and "practical" tests

wiz-bang measuring devices like CFM meters and scales might be fine for the "lab coat" crowd, but they're of little value to the BDCC where the "rubber meets the road"
Numbers don't mean a thing without "practical" tests/evaluations to go with them

you'll need little more than a measuring bucket, a wand, 25ft of hose and sol line and a piece of dry carpet large enough for squirt and suck evaluations
KISS..start there as your base line

After the base line has been established, then you can play with other variables
Like longer hose runs, wands supplied with porty, and parameters of psi/hose runs recommended from said porty manufacture (if applicable)

Obviously you want to run a "straight game", TeamRon, and I have no doubts you guys make every effort to be fair and impartial.

Just don't try an make it rocket science.
Leave that to CRI-SOA and their radioactive dUrt ...... :p

I think there should be a glory hole with a wand and hose sticking out of it (LOL). People can then play around with the wand and a few pieces of carpet and then in the end vote by the number and screw around all they want. Then the people's choice will decide which number. Then and only then the machine matching the number should be reviled.

If you want you can even switch the numbers around occasionally so that people can't stack up their votes against what they figure a unit's identity might be.

thats an interesting idea.
though they wouldn't know how much water they recovered, just the "feel" of the wand and the "feel" of the just stroked carpet.
Would also need a Lot of carpet if everyone wanted to try it dry carpet!
