Rotovac Shear Dry Upholstery tool yesterday

Got a chance to use my new Rotovac Shear Dry upholstery tool some more yesterday on some Pottery Barn Linen.

I carry 3 upholstery tools including this one, the Sapphire Scientific, and the Prochem with glides.

Like having some options and it seems their are definitely more individual preference the smaller the tool.

I like some of the features of this tool and the more I use it and dial it in, I like it.....it is doing some great work.

I am going to keep using it some more....and might get another one for the other van too....

So just a quick video using the Rotovac yesterday.

I may have to give my Rotovac shear dry another go. I have been using my Hydrokinetic due to its higher performance, but I do remember liking the lighter feel of the plastic tool.

I tend to want the flow set higher, but then I didn't like the spraying back on me while using the shear dry. Especially strong from the center hole, so I plugged it up.

I don't have the SS tool, so I will look forward to your comparison after you have had some more time with them.

It's a good tool, and works well. Used it today on some trashed micro fiber and it performed well. It is light and easy to use. I don't own the other tools Mark referenced so I couldn't comment on them.

We have been upgrading the small hose in the head.
The ferrule is small and snaps off.
They have covered them under warranty but we hope they fix the issue like we did.

I actually found that just backing off the pressure at tool, I was still getting nice flow, but the center hole seems to be somewhat still useful to move the water out around the head suction.

It will spray you if you are holding it off the material with a lot of flow as has been discussed.

But, if found it happened when I pulled the trigger on the initial pull of the trigger, then after the pressure was relieved a bit, it seems better control of the water.

I had my TM set at 500 psi. Not sure if backing off the pressure at the TM if it would be better. Will try that sometime, but it didn't bother me enough to walk out to the van and change it I guess....LOL.

For this linen, I just found the right flow with it and it was doing a nice job, so I went with it.

Didn't have any upholstery yesterday.....just trashed carpets

So, I am going to keep trying things....

I don't think Rotovac did a good job introducing this tool.

Everyone make the assumption that it is a Upholstery Pro clone, including myself.

Demoed the tool in Clearwater. There is a channel around the flow which fills and creates the flush. What they call the "Shear".

Could see this tool being more helpful on trashed upholstery. Also, more forgiving concerning the streaking that I sometimes get with the Upholstery Pro unless it is set just right.

I didn't buy it. I have the Upholstery Pro and a PMF as a backup. I don't do enough Upholstery to justify 3 tools.

Wish I could get an honest opinion on the Mytee tool...

Feeling the lips with my finger and playing around a little with it on some pillows in Clearwater was enough to keep me from really considering the tool.

I wrestled for TOO long with the DriMaster 2 that had a similar issue.
The DriMaster 3 is better than the 2, with a redesigned head.

I'm just a carpet cleaner but can't understand how any upholstery tool could ever be considered adequate, when the mouth of the tool is SHARP. It kinda ruins my day because I don't like cleaning upholstery anyway!

Last thing I want to do is hack my way through cleaning a couch and then buy that couch.

I have 7-9 hand tools.... 2 good ones Hydrokentic & SS and the rest are crap including the drimaster 2.... I was lucky to have it snag a office chair and not a silk or fine couch...

Yes I think the ShearDry may have a slight edge over the Upholstery Pro on the very worst possible situation you might encounter in fabric cleaning but for me and the way I like to set a tool for continuous flow and keep the trigger on with no dripping or overspray, the Rotovac tool serves no practical purpose. It's a big sloppy mess and I think I will sell it because the Upholstery Pro can be set to blast to high hell and will do that rare flushing also, plus it is a much more civilized tool I can use in the nice homes I clean and not worry about water damaging surrounding items and floors and walls.

We just did some edging work on stairs today with it and around sheet rock and personal belongings... Had it dialed in well and it cleaned very well... No over spray and still cleaned well on some Berber in a tough situation... We are getting lucky right now in a number of situations with it... Will keep you all informed
