They sent me the SS shoes but didn't like them. SS causes more drag than the vinyl glides. As far as the foam distorted, that was one of the bugs which I discovered when I first bought the unit. Call RV and they will send you some SS clips that prevent the gasket from getting tweaked, it's a rather clever but super easy install.
As far as the picks I'm a huge VH fan, I've been learning guitar but I'm a drummer for many years.
