Glad you mentioned "empty the waste tank first!". Fill your tank with clean water once in a while and let the APO pump. It will help clean out the gunk. A quick suck with the vac hose can clear out some of the lint if your pump is slow. I did some flood extracting this morning which gave me 500+ gallons of sump water to flush the APO.

I'd be lost without the APO.
