So I got a call today from a customer to clean some SmartStrand carpet. Insisted that the retailer told her that we cannot use any chemicals on it to clean it just water. Oh and her little dog has pissed all over it too. Has anyone heard of any of this nonsense.

I'd only do it with a release of responsibility waiver. Water rinses but doesn't clean well on its own.

From what I understand the manufacturer says to not leave an alkaline residue
Dealers are misunderstanding what this mean.
Prespray and then rinse on the acid side

Yes they do and most are told water only or the warrantee is voided.

Smartstrand is a Mohawk product... they require a preconditioner with ph 10 and below with fresh hot water rinse not to exceed 160 degree...

just remember the hot water your spraying starts cooling instantly when sprayed. so i wouldnt worry too much about heat unless your have a super hot tm with short hose runs and a pimped out wand with jet extenders and high flow.

I have smart strand....

Been cleaning as normal....

No problems...

And I have a higher density carpet (57 ounce) and no wear patterns or other issues....

But, have come across some junk too

Remember, these guys don't understand "At The Machine" and "At The Wand" temperatures. They are considering a consistent temperature of 160 on the carpet fibers themselves. When you factor in the temperature loss once your cleaning fluid exits the jet, breaks down into a spray, each droplet of which releases heat into the air, its unlikely most any truck mount will maintain such heat consistently on the fiber surface.

pH under 10 and water as hot as you can get it (160 F at the fibers could easily be 220 F and above at the machine) - This cleans a lot better than water only. You have gained a lot from the information posted in this thread including directly from Mohawk.

I have cleaned smart strand with hot water only as told. It didn't clean up. I now feel confident to tell people they are throwing their money away not using chemicals to clean with but it's their carpet and I'll do whatever they want.

So, the retailer sold her hardwood.

Don't keep your mouth shut....how would she know that you clean hardwood?? (and make at least twice as much as cleaning her carpets...)

I talked with the retailer and she called the customer to let her know and it is okay to use a preconditioner on her carpet.
I grabbed all the literature I can find on SmartStrand and other Carpets they were selling so I can keep up with this new stuff.

I got a sample of this stuff called lifeguard Carpet it has a moisture barrier built into the backing. kind of cool, very expensive. I wonder how this stuff will work for the water damage

Man, I looked at that Smart Strand brochure. Wow!! I almost ran to the local dealer to buy one.
Then, unfortunately, I remembered how it looks after a few years. Mr Happy's excluded.

I love the longest part of the brochure- "Exclusions"!
Brutal.

I have two customers that have filed wear warranty claims on their smart strand carpets this w eek. One was installed only four months ago! I've not had very many problems cleaning the crap. It's the wear problems that make me angry. If it wears out in a year or two, they're less likely to replace it with more carpet.
