In skills? A lot about carpet cleaning, some by hit and miss, some just from knowledge. The ability to look at a large job, have an idea to within an hour or 2 how long it's going to take and how much to charge to make it profitable. Learning how to be a quick take on people's personality and winning them over by being warm, frank and qualifying their needs and your ability to meet them. I taught myself how to strip and wax floors. I did a hall and stairs at a dance academy with nothing more than instructions from a supplier and what was on the jugs. Took me an entire weekend, but they were HUGELY impressed with the end result. Then I got a call from a school to look at the tile. I really didn't want to do it, but if I did do it I was gonna make money. I put in a bid and darned if I didn't get it. It took me 7 long hard days, but I made $3200 with supplies paid for by the school and WOWED the customer. I figured if I got good at it with experience, it could pay well. It takes me 2 days now with a helper. Upholstery was all self taught after learning the bare basics. I haven't bought a sofa yet and don't plan to. Mattress cleaning seem like a solid value add on for residential and I've done ok with that. I have a management company that pays me an extra $50 to clean a 7 by 10 balcony - 10 minutes. Using peroxide before it became the soup de jour, but it made sense to me.

So what did you teach yourself?

This needs a shadow thread about what you taught yourself in business.....

Carpet repair.
I got a video from Steve Andrews. I asked questions on here and went for it.
Stretching and repairs have been a cash cow for me.

I came to the cleaning dark side from installation Charlie. I used to do a lot of repair but now I haven't done anything in years, I did get some amazing training in installations from 2 brothers from Glasgow. They taught me how to sew seams and patches and how to properly install carpets, sheet vinyl and VCT.
