Sir Richard Francis Burton, the famed Victorian Era British explorer of Africa and India came upon a unique dispute when he was in India.
It seems there were two groups of people in one district he visited:
One, known as "The Wipers", cleaned themselves with a dry cloth after the necessary act of elimination.
The other, known as "The Washers", cleaned themselves with a water and a cloth after a bowel movement.
Each thought the other was an abomination.
There is no convincing people who held onto any deep and intransigent belief system.
