This is a 35 year old sculpted carpet that I did today. Yes it is sun faded and there is a hole under the sofa but in general, it is in remarkable shape. No delamination, no buckling and it cleans easily. Compared today's trash that carpet manufacturers say last for 7 years if your lucky.

Everything used to be made to last, but no longer.

Every time I clean an older Stainmaster carpet, I run into the chattering of the wand because the carpet has turned into Velcro in the traffic areas.

The problem with what has changed is the whole way we perceive price... I believe it was @The Great Oz or maybe @billyeadon who said it's cheaper to produce other flooring instead of carpet.... Carpet manufacturers have made crap carpet for the HD and Lowe's to sell at a rediculous price point...

We Americans became price conscious after China entered the WTO....

We live in a disposable world.

The price issue became a big deal in the 70s with japan. They took efficiency and automation to the next level.

We tried to match them but instead of making good stuff cheap we began making crap.

I always think of frank zappas lyrics cant remember the song name, everything we got here is american made its a little bit cheasy but its nicely displayed.

I cleaned some sculptured stuff thursday in a rental that was installed in 92. It turned out looking better than the year old crap I cleaned yesterday.
