I think I figured out what Thumbtack is. Some fool wants you to bid on a $100 job. I got a message that "(first name) wanted a quote for 200 sf of carpet cleaning and a flight of stairs estimated in (city)." Well (first name) from (city) called a week ago with the exact same job. On the phone I told him it was about $100, depending on unseen factors. He said he'd get back to me.
Thumbtack has twice invited me to bid on this exact job. The guy has a $100 job. I'm not going to even bid $99. It is what it is. This guy's address is 2 blocks away from a competitor, same street, different number. Surely he has seen the guy's van and has called for a quote.

I just don't bid on $100 jobs. That's an insult. I rarely bid $250 jobs. The price is the price.
I had priced a union hall for a job, about $300. They came back and said they had a $250 bid, would I like to counter offer. I didn't know this was a bid. I said no thanks. I used to be a union worker and a shop steward. This game was very much out of character for some unions, but very much in character for others.

Thumbtack empowers these people to race to the basement. The 3-4 jobs they invited me to bid on, quite frankly I could just as well pass on them. They are too small and too far away. Seems to be a dead end.

We've been quoting a few, passing on the small ones, haven't landed any yet but for @5 a pop I'm willing to play a little more before I call it quits

I have read about rampant fraud on the site. There are contractor / business complaints to read for days if you google it.
