What engines are the most reliable,
No valve adjustments
Longest number of hours before replacement

And what are their weaknesses?

Which small engines to avoid?

only experience with a 3 cyl I have is a water cooled Kobota on a home built TM I cobbled together
appx 2800 hours before I pulled it and replaced with legit manufactured TM .

Nicest, smoothest, quietest, trouble free motor I've ever used
(can't say the same about the TM some hillbilly made)

My 23 HP Kohler on the White Magic lasted well over 10,000 hours. Only replaced it because it had a blown head gasket and people were calling the cops because it was so loud. Cop said I was at 75 decibels. That's not bad. I would avoid Briggs and Stratton. Why not a 4 cyl. Nissan?

Power to weight ratio and cost, you'll have to fake your calculations to leave behind air cooled engines Kohler and Honda.

A properly maintained Kohler ch20 will just keep going and going a going to 5000 plus hours but there will be a lot of maintenance cost after the first 2500 hours.

Coils, valve cover gaskets, flywheel Magnet’s, fuel shut off solenoids, various oil leaks.

This shouldn’t happen on a Kubota.

Our Kubotas and Diahatusu ( Maxx470d) have never given us any problems in the last 15 years.

I think the early Titan575's had a Diahatsu sticker on their kohler motors

Kubota wg972. Thats what i put on my machine becuase it will last longer than i will with no problems. It comes on a prochem Apex and some saphire TM’s. When i was researching engines i called the rep for Kubota over the western U.S. He told me in the oil fields the WG972 3 cyl will generally run 24-7 until they hit 50,000 hours and then they do a simple rebuild and run them another 50k hours. They are the king of reliability and longevity IMO for a TM. My machine runs 1.04 GPH. Very effiencient.

I had a Max 470 D actually 2 and both were problems. The bottom line was vapor lock in the fuel. They couldn't fix it but I did . I ran a 1 and a half inch vacuum hose from the carb air intake out to the side doors for cooler air and that fixed it and I sold it like a boat owner. I still would like a 3 cyc water cooled to use but Its to late for me due to my old age shoulda done it sooner. I am in south Florida HOT I love it here, maybe that was the problem and I might retire in two years ? jz.

Do they still make that PC Apex with a kubota?
the Prochem Apex is on its way out. I heard that the Apex will be under the SS name now (see Sunbelt catalog) in a month or so. Not sure what motor or changes they made, but to me its a new machine and since Im looking to get a new one, Im not going to be a Guinea pig on a new model

We dont run ours on petrol (gas), we run them on LPG. Never ever a problem and 1/2 price running.
