today's Saltillo Job

just these 70 or so feet took 2 hours to strip.

I'll go back tomorrow to apply 4 coats of wax/ finish


pretty much have to charge $10 a foot to make carpet money stripping Saltillo tiles.

20 plus year old floor, never dealt with..

soaking in Zep stripper

Went over and over and over with a Malgrit brush and a black pad..

fully naked and drying..

Nice work, I hate stripping that stuff.

That buffer is a classic and my fave so far. When I started in this industry my former boss had one that was already old and used. He gave it to me when I left his company. My guys use it almost daily with no probs while other new machines have come and died.

how do you apply the sealer?

how long will it last? i know a near impossible question but a few years or what time frame?

i just walked from one of these because of lack of experience in them..only see them in fla every 6 months or so.

flat mop it on Dave.

good finishes self level and dry in 10 to 15 minutes.


thats the easy part.


getting the old stuff off can be a nightmare, especially if different products were used over time. If some idiot put an epoxy or lacquer finish on it, run like hell.


strong stripper, scrub scrub scrub rinse repeat...

Ron does way more than I do but he is all gungho on concrete sealer that takes an hour to dry between each of the seven coats he like to put down.

like I said, 10 bucks a foot is about what makes it worth the hassle to strip and re coat.


if you have super picky home depot labors who you trust you could pay them hourly and charge a bit less.

be prepared to remover base boards and mask or paint walls OR hire someone to do both. It a huge mess.

What finish do you use. I always used Plaza or Ole lots of coats...but I like that look to have as an option.

Saltillo tile is often coated with a solvent-based acrylic sealer . . .

which can make removal requiring a solvent stripper.

For a water-based sealer we would use Diversey Plaza sealer ($15/gal.),
since it is designed for stone floors.

We like the satin look also, for better durability and uniformity.
