The stinky mercaptans are bonded to the textile and do not easily, if at all, flush out with just soap and water alone. When you do not dislodge the source of the odor, your rug will continue to stink later. To get the odor out, you must get the urine out. You need a specific enzymatic reaction to take place: The hydrolysis of urea. Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions. In other words, the enzymes break up the urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia, two gases that evaporate quickly.
