I have a 2004 UD 1400. Last night on the way in it started missing a beat. I guess this is the best way to describe it. While just driving along or setting it will loose rpm down to 0 for anywhere from 1-10 seconds. I blew out air cleaner, cleaned the fuel strainer, I had put a new fuel filter on about 2 months ago. It either is a fuel issue or maybe even an electricle problem. I did 2 jobs today and listened to her surge the entire time.
When the rpm drops it will flash either the atm or check engine light for that same amount of time.

I'm convinced it's not a diverter problem, that was just serviced as well. I put new batteries in 2 weeks ago, one post found slightly loose and I tightned and that didn't fix it.

The new ud dealer here won't have their analysis software until next week. I have a bunch of jobs lined up Fri, Tue Wed next week. I am going to get a new filter and put on Fri between jobs.
Any thoughts??

fuel filter..

clogged injector........

bad injector.......

bad diesel fuel.......

fuel pump may be having issues.......

start with the filter and then put a diesel additive in the tank (cleaner) to clear it out....

Well it crapped out the rest of the way today. It starts right up but the rpm gauge doesn't budge from zero. The check engine light blinks while the key is acctivated, and she is smoking white exhaust like crazy when it runs for just a few seconds.

Can't get a filter till Sat am. Washed current filter out 2-3 times with fresh diesel no luck. Finally got into where the gauze filter is that books recommends cleaning when you replace the fuel filter and there's no gauze there.

I really think this is a bigger problem of some type, but can't get it into shop until next week. First time I have had to call and cancel jobs due to equipment failure, what a bummer, bad part is now I will have to have her towed in "whenever" they get their software loaded next week.

You need to call Chris Pond At the cleaners Depot in Nashville, TN. I forgot about him. He can handle that. it might be a few hour drive but it might be worth it, the also have a UD dealer on the same road. But Chris can handle the TM and the truck

billy your truck should be fine. ive had this issue with two of mine. you engine is going into limp mode because one the sensors is not within parameters. i had the same issue, would be driving down the road and bam the truck would either start to choke or completely lose power for a few seconds. the check engine would come on and off as the truck derated itself ( it is protecting itself). the problem i had both times was the same sensor and it sounds like it is the engine speed sensor.

81 Magnetic Sensor 2373119D00 1 $73.96

went to the dealership and told two of the mechanics that were there the sypmoms and they told me to check two things.

first check the two wires that are connected to the speed sensor, more than likely they are corroded, burned, smashed, damaged in some other way or just disconnected. they told me either way if damaged or not to cut off the factory connectors and butt tie the wires together to ensure proper connections as to say, if it hasnt failed yet, it will fail in the future.

second, is to check the sensor for proper operating perameters. in other words you need to check the sensor for it operatings specs like correct ohms and volt test. i dont know where i put my manual but i the service manual that brad f. sent me it listed the specs for the sensor. both of mine were out of proper operating perameters. so i changed both. most ud dealers should have them in stock.

i am almost sure that it has to be the magnetic sensor, it is located at the front of the engine. will go outside and take some pics to give you an idea.

here is a pic of the actuall sensor.

in this pic i am standing beside the front passenger tire, lean over the tire and look through the belts.

you need to look between the large black hose and the frame to see the location of the sensor.

here is a pic from the drivers side, of the wire of the magnetic sensor and how i cut them bought some covered connectors and re-did the connection.

here is the pic of the factory connections that have a high failure rate.

Thanks Michael, this looks very promising.

I might just try to enjoy one of my holidays off. Didn't sleep real well last night thinking of what may be wrong. I will post once I get her back up running. I will check these sensor connections today, after all that is exactly what happened with my stop motor switch the wires were corroded and wasn't letting the motor get a good connection.

Well, they got it in to look at it today. Codes indicate with certainty that it is a bad fuel pump. They are calling me back with prices on new and rebuilt. I checked Tom's Truck ctr. new pump around 7k hopefully a rebuild is much less expensive.

Ouch! (Amazing an injecter fuel pump is more than a new tranny) what the heck
No wonder Marty wanted to get rid of his V

Part of the problem is that they put them in stupid hard to find part UD trucks.

I find it hard to believe that the problem is a fuel pump............ I would take it somewhere else. How many fuel pumps go out and act like the problems you are having? none!

84k miles on truck. I have never ran it out of fuel. It had 53k on it when I purchased it.

Mikey if a dish washer put sugar in it, it would have been because I rushed him out when he was milking the clock. I have washed way to dang many dishes in my early years so as not to have to be in a resty all night. I implimented a policy that all kitchen personel had to stay until everyone was finished, they would all stack up on whatever dept. was behind so that we would all leave together for security reasons. Enough about the resty business it's making me feel sick to my stomach already.

Joey, that's the problem with most dealers isn't it, your kinda at their mercy to some degree. Since there isn't another dealer in Lex and truck really isn't driveable I am limited to my options. Like I said in another post "never again"

what codes did you have?

do not change the fuel pump with out firdt checking to see if the sensor i am telling you about is out. it will tell tics that your pump is not sending the correct amount of fuel. i would get a couple of other opinions before dropping a crap load of cash on a pump.

Nissan UD Diesel
ID-TICS System
1. Place diagnostic switch in the Off position.
2. Carry out diagnosis under the following three conditions:
a. Place ignition switch in the On position.
b. Crank engine.
c. Start and operate engine.
3. The trouble codes will be displayed by the flashing Engine Control Lamp and the Overheat Warning Lamp and the Overheat Warning Buzzer.
Trouble Code Interpretation
MID-TICS System
The diagnostic trouble codes will be displayed by the check engine lamp. For example, a code 12 will be displayed by the check engine lamp flashing 1 time for approximately 1.2 seconds, followed by a .6 second pause, then 2 short flashes. Each trouble code will be displayed 3 times before the next trouble code is displayed.
Clearing Trouble Codes
88-94
1. Turn the ignition key on.
2. Turn the diagnostic mode selector on the ECU fully clockwise and wait more than two seconds then turn the selector fully counterclockwise. The ECCS system is now in mode 2.
3. Turn the diagnostic mode selector on the ECU fully clockwise and wait more than two seconds then turn the selector fully counterclockwise. The ECCS system is now in mode 1. ECU memory is now erased.
MID-TICS System
1. Release diagnostic switch.
2. Place ignition switch in On position.
3. Check that Overheat Warning Lamp is displaying Diagnostic Display Code.
4. Connect memory clear connector 2400400Z09, or a suitable jumper wire to reset switch terminals. The reset switch is located behind the electrical unit board.
5. Check that Overheat Warning Lamp and Buzzer display shows Diagnostic Display Code 0–1. The System memory will be cleared in approximately 10 seconds.
6. Remove connector or jumper wire from reset switch electrical connector.
7. Connect electrical connector to reset switch.
8. Place ignition switch in Off position.
9. Place ignition switch in On position, then check Overheat Warning Lamp and Buzzer. Diagnostic Display Code 0–1 should be indicated.
Trouble Code MID-TICS System

1-2 Pre-stroke Servo System
1-3 Rack Sensor System
1-5 Engine Speed Sensor System (Disconnected)
1-6 Engine Speed Sensor System (No Pulse)

Michael,
Do you know the code for when the fuel injector pump is actually bad? It's not listed here.

Thanks so much for your input

Ok, talked to the shop super today. The codes were 41, 37, 33. Only the code 37 is showing active at this time. He said the 41 code showed on 255 cts, 37 code on 8 cts, and 33 code on 11cts. Whatever this means

For an update on the fuel pump. Talked with super on Friday, he quoted the new price (I won't even go into that) I told him no way. So he was to find out the price on a rebuild Monday and said he would call me Monday afternoon. I hadn't heard from him by 5pm so I called and he told me that he had thought about the truck all weekend and he had told me on Friday that it seemed like the timing was off on it, with the white exhaust and no power. So Monday they pulled it back into shop, cleared all the old codes and ran the dynastics a few more times and kept getting cam shaft timing sensor code. So he ordered one for it Monday and told me it would be in Tuesday or Wed. He left a message while I was at BNI meeting this am to call him back. I called back at 11am he explained to me that they had installed the sensor and it was purring like a kitten. WOWWWWWW!!!!!!!! He wanted to keep it for the day to drive it some and check it out further. I hope to be picking her up Wed am. Keep your fingers crossed. Oh, by the way the sensor was $75 or so. I had told him (over and over) about my friend that had had two trucks with the same problems and that it was a eng. speed sensor fix both times.

Thank you dealtimeman!
