what HodderdInk said and Larry B
But i already typed this before I saw their posts....so I'm submitting it ANYWAY!

sump pump failure during heavy rains.
either due to overwhelmed storm sewer systems and the sump has no where to pump
or the storms knocked out electrcity and no battery back up sump is in use.

Flooded rivers and homes/business in low laying areas is another cause for WD

This year it is gutter obstructions. Huge "whirlybird" crop off the Maple trees. Had a very late freeze last year and had none, this year they doubled down and huge rain to go with.

ice damming

happens in times of freezing rain creating a sheet of ice on the roof.

the middle of roof gets thawed due to heat in the home rising, but the eves stay frozen.
as a result, ice melt from the middle of the roof gets damed up and seeps under the shingles

Rising ground water level.

Septic tank backups.

Defective or clogged gutter downspouts.

Clogged grease traps in a restaurant causing a backup.

Wind blowing part of roof off. (Happened to me!!)

Electrolysis in pipes. (Happened to me!!)

AAANNNDDD.... the worst job with the stupidest cause was 10 floors wet in a high rise condo building- The couple had just moved in on Friday. Condo on the 10th floor. Nothing unpacked. Boxes everywhere. The wife was going to thaw out a frozen chicken in the sink by running hot water over it then cooking it for dinner.

The husband says forget it, let's go out to dinner. Out they went. While out, they decided to go to the beach overnight.

I get a call from the management company at 3 AM Saturday morning. There was a flood call from the 6th floor. They checked above them. Nobody home on the 7th floor, water coming down from the ceiling.

They checked the 8th floor. Nobody home, water coming down from the ceiling.

They checked the 9th floor. Nobody home, water coming down from the ceiling.

And nobody home on the 10th floor, but the water was running in the kitchen sink, where the now thawed chicken stopped up the drain.

Inches of water on the floor. Rolled up oriental rugs wet- color running onto the white wool carpet. Dozens of boxes wet. Mattresses set on edge against the wall wet.

The people came home around noon on Saturday. I was still working, nearly finished extracting. The front door was open. In they came. They got a shock.

The water reached the ground floor.

I made a LOT of money on that job.

The people did not have insurance- not for their stuff, nor for the ruined stuff on floors under them.

The management company paid my bill. They collected- or tried to- from the people who caused the flood.

I have no real idea of what it cost them- I guessed around $200,000.

Moral- do not leave water running- anywhere- and go away.

Gary's story reminded me of another WD.

the folks had a wet bar that was never used and ended up being a junk counter more or less.
One of their BIG dogs sniffed out some edible goodies on the bar.
While the pooch was grabing his new found booty, his paws turned on the lever faucets.

The sink being full of junk/storage wouldn't drain.

They came home to a mess

Just did one where the fresh water to the washing machine wasn't hooked up right.

Mostly I get the fridge hook up popping off.

Just found a new one. The shut off valve failed on a washing machine. They washed some clothes and went to bed.
Woke up with a beautiful view of their own private lake.
