Hi,
I just did a cleaning job in a high end home. The carpet was some type of berber, woven in a pattern. The customer had the brochure for it and they did not write what the carpet was made of, but they recommended HWE to clean it, which is what I did. As soon as I put down my prespray ( Esteam Suspend free) the carpet started getting wavy. My machine is an older hydramaster CDS so it's not super hot. I had that happen one other time but it was a different type of carpet and the waves disappeared once the carpet was dry.
Do I need to be concerned here?Could this be a bad install job that needs a restretch or did I make some type of mistake that I'm not aware of?

Most likely a poor installation job.... I wouldn't sweat it.... Now if it was an axminster carpet, you'd be in some deep doodoo....

When your pre spray (moisture) touched the carpet, it already showed.... Imho, it should relax back to normal in a day or so....

Is it a Rug or Carpet? If rug and has a Border then it might be made from Stark---- Lets hope Not-- When ever going into a High-end home, if we think the rug is from Stark we decline to clean them. If Bordered- the rug may have to be taken apart, Blocked and stretched and possible cut down slightly and sewn back together.
Good Luck

It was wall to wall carpet. I found a loose piece in the home and it hat regular backing like any aonter carpet.Nothing strange. I looked at the brochure for fiber identification, but I should have written down the name of the manufacturer. But it definitely wasn't Axminster or Stark, there was no mention of the fiber but the cleaning recommendation was HWE and Steamway as a cleaner. I guess I did what I was supposed to do. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

If the carpet is not pulled tight enough, at times the backing can get wet from cleaning. When the backing gets wet it expands and you get a ripple... Someone made up a fancy word for it, can't remember now... Dimensional stability? Whatever...

This can also happen on commercial carpet, it will be more of a bubble than a ripple.

What's Stark?
Stark is a manufacturer that also makes a lot of woven wool carpet and rugs. Rich people and their not so practical designers love it, particularly in white and if there are six children and 3 dogs in the household. They cost a small fortune. Shall I say anymore?

If the water gets to the weft and warps (Foundation) they buckle. If it happens, you cannot correct it on location. Sometime you can stretch it in-plant, by re-wetting and hanging to dry with heavy weights.

They may be one of the reasons why designers and carpet cleaners rarely are best friends.

Hey, "Gimmegig", tell the client to look at the positives: The carpet is waving because it so happy to see them. The same effect, but much neater than a dog.

The manufacturer used clay as an extender in his glue. They only want the glue to have x amount of shear strength so they dilute it. It probably came out of China. They have lots of clay laying around. The clay absorbs the prespray and swells. Unless you were the first to clean it they have already seen it. It will dry and flatten back out. Mine always do by the next morning. See like Marty said, more crap

Dimensional stability is a sizing or a backing applied something to give it structure. There are many many types of carpeting that require Dimensional stabilty. By learning all this is , it let's you to determine There are others on this board that know more than me. Can't wait to hear.

Ofer as you know it is associated with any rug that is woven or a natural fiber. All stark sells is other manufacturers Prestige mills, Bloomsburgh, Karistan, Stanton,Merida, Kane and etc. Lol I always laugh when people say it's Stark carpet. So instead of buying direct you paid for a name.

Thanks Harry.
I ain't buying any of that woven $$it. It's a designer's fav. Which, in a nut shell, tells you pretty much all that you need to know. (Not practical!!!)

Regardless of who makes it, the consumer (and until you opened my eyes me too) knows it as a Stark. Which is what Johnny asked. And you're absolutely right the issues are not Stark specific, they're true for any woven rug with jute core. Only Stark makes us a little bit more pissed off :winky:

It just starks us the wrong way.
