Last time I cleaned this leather was nearly two years ago.

Back then it had extensive mold problems.

No mold this time, but a weird rust colored stain.

It is most apparent in the folds, or where the leather contacts other leather.

My immediate thoughts were off-gassing of some sort.

Then I got to the last piece, the back cushion looks like something has been spilt over it.

Looks like airborne oil ????

Lots of liquid to flush it out seemed to do the trick, although one piece, the stains on the sides of the seat cushion came back when dry.

A second cleaning removed them.

Any ideas of what it may be :?: :?:

The lady say's that the leather has always been covered and although it is close to the kitchen, they don't cook oily foods and always have the exhaust fan on over the stove.

Thanks,

Ooroo,

There are some airborne fungii that will cause a reddish or pink discoloration. In the Northwest US, we see it on inflatable boats (where the cover holds moisture against the hull), boat tops, patio umbrellas and the occasional yurt. Fades away with direct sunlight exposure.

Just one possibility.

Thanks Bryan, we also get something similar down under which we call "Red cattle dog mould".

This term was first coined by Graham Bull of Bull's Leather Care down in Brisbane.

It looks like rusty splotches splashed over the leather, but won't come off, direct sunlight or otherwise.

Hi C & S, yep, I also thought of smoke, but they are non smokers.

Come on Roger, 'n Tony, 'n all you others.

Ooroo,

That is a weird one Shorty.
I'd only be guessing but it will probably be caused by some airborne contaminate or by moisture.
