I'm trying to decide if I should add a Temporary 5% fuel surcharge in the hopes that the gas prices are also temporary or just increase prices 10+%

Fuel expense is about 10% of revenue and increasing.

Best just to raise prices in my opinion. Customers hate being nickel and dimed like that.

I raised my area rugs by .$50 per square foot. My minimum charge for in home is still the same if you only have 1-2 average rooms. $150. A 1 bedroom suite is $200 unless it's in my immediate service area. 5-10 minute drive.

Price of gas today. This for filling up my little Astrovan which had better than a quarter tank showing on the fuel gauge.

Can we keep this going without memes and politics so I don't have to move it?

It's a good topic and while there is some truth to the meme above unless a carpet cleaner has caught the latest variant of pailliotitis they probably can't fit their shit in a Prius
John how much fuel are you saving since ditching the Big Truck and going with a 370/Transit.

I know your Subi gets 30 plus.

what are you worried about?
Bury $20 in each invoice.

most cry babies are drying 15mpg mega trucks on the weekends being my point.

if you dont line item everything it doesnt matter how you do it.

I just write down the list of what is being cleaned and the total. I found that if you itemize everything it just gives them something to gripe about, where as one, total price they can take it or leave it.
That exactly what I have been doing...I've landed more hard surface jobs this week than I have the last 3 mos..

My particular attempt at making this work is to give on site quotes for future work, first time customers. Used to be more of a flat rate Sq. Ft. guy, but now see the "case sensitive" scenario. So when I quote new work I will make sure price is good for me. This is also a good time to be proactive in getting all the "while your here" requests considered ahead of time and ability to charge accordingly. Fortunate enough to have minimal traffic and mostly local jobs, so this works for me. I used to just give the price before I start, and they can have the option to refuse, but actually doing the quote ahead of time makes things flow a lot better imo. Also the tech isn't on the clock when I quote now. I have done plenty of quotes that take 1/2 hour, on payroll, to answer questions, measure, price or they feel your rushing. Then miss things (as customer talks to you) or run quick numbers wrong and you have to deliver.

So in short, pre qualify without tech on clock, make the $ for the job work for you, and have at it.

Also tracking how much gross $ taken in on 1 tank of gas. Just sayin it is still pretty good margin, but feel the pain.

How big a bite does a $2 increase (the difference from 2 years ago) take out of you a year?
at my average it works out to $1000 a year for me

We are kicking around the idea of adding a $5.00 fuel surcharge to each order as a separate line item. We pay our crews commission, so an increase in prices will partially go into their pocket.

We raised our prices last summer and to raise them again so quickly may not sit well with our customers. The $5.00 fuel surcharge is very understandable since the cost of gas is the lead story in all the newscasts!

I agree with this... But its not 100% accurate..

Texas is truck and trailer country... But the vast majority are working trucks... Pulling cattle to put meat on the table.. Hauling grain.. Hay.. And other things needed... Pulling the wagons from the fields full of products for the stores...
Your not going to do this in a nissian pick up...

There are those that drive them just for show.. And that's where it makes since...

It's a snowball effect... Higher cost to bring in the cattle and other goods.. ... Higher cost to run there equipment to grow and or produce products... Higher cost to truck it from place to place... It cuts into everybody's bottom line...
And it will finally catch us all...

I remember in 2008...... gas prices went sideways.. Alot of cleaners we adding extra fuel cost........... But in the end people weren't spending the money paying for carpet cleaning..... which most view as a luxury not a necessity...we all took a bit of a hit then.. And you will now....and like in 2008..you can add a gas charge.. But most clients are not going to be happy about it.. They have there own Gas prices to worry about.. You can raise your prices....and you will still loose some.. It's a no win.. Your going to fell it like everyone else....your just going to have to ride it out..

Coit tried that back in the '90s during the odd and even days at the gas station, it didn't go well.

Bury the cost, some otherway

Of course we should be raising our prices. We should raise our prices every day. We shouldn’t wait for something to cause a reacted price raise we should be proactive on raisin our prices. We should raise our prices on every job until we get resistance or pushback. If you’re not having a discount a little bit every now and then. You’re probably not charge enough to begin with. And everybody needs to swing for the fences every day. We don’t be afraid to give a half price. What are they gonna say no.

I'm very glad I switched to the 370/Transit and get my fuel from Costco with 4% cashback.

I haven't done the numbers on fuel savings but I'm sure it is substantial since Costco doesn't sell diesel.

Of course Americans are really concerned about the cost of gasoline. People bought those Ford F-150s, Chevy Silverados, Dodge Rams, etc. when the price of gas was lower and had been for a consistent length of time. The purchases were made with the cost of the fuel worked in to their monthly budget. Now that budget gets more than doubled, and that vehicle may no longer be affordable.

I am running that E85 only now I am trying not to raise our prices as we haven't really gained traction out of the slower JAN & FEB months

E85 should be good but I think it burns faster its 3$ a gallon right now
