What causes this?

I posted about this before but did not have pictures. This is a new carpet about 6 months old and has never been cleaned. It is in the basement of a house and has nothing to do with lighting. The customer says they have never used any cleaning agents on the area. What are the possible causes?

Sometimes called "fume shading" as found around floor registers on gas systems. Not the same as the carbon-based filtration soiling.

I would also say thats fume fading.

When traces of combustion gases combine with trace amounts of Butylated hydroxytoluene off gassing from re-bond underpad the result if yellowing and many types of textiles.

It can also be excellerated by having tufted rugs or latex/ rubber backed rugs on the carpet. These will all off Gas and cause color discoloration as well.

tell custy to put some nice ceramic tile to match the fireplace insert a couple feet out from fireplace.....problem solved and it looks just as good if not better.

Like Bathrooms, I never understood why anyone would put carpet there.

There is an area that is unaffected directly in front of the base of the fireplace out about 2 inches. That seems to correspond with height of the brass base of the firepalce surround.

Given that the fireplace is on, is it possible that what you are seeing is merely a reflection of the glass and/or light cast from the fire itself?

I would hold a tarp or something large in front of the fireplace to see if the "spot" disappears!

No, it not a lighting problem. I am sure Harry is right. The carpet retailor is waiting for the sales rep to do something. We have a lot of this combination up here in Canada. People like carpet and gas firplaces in their basements but this problem is still very rare.
