What happened here?

I have never seen anything like this before. Pink strips only in areas with direct sun, including stair risers. Very symmetrical.

She said it showed up several weeks after the last guy cleaned the carpet.
I don't believe it was caused by cleaning, but I'm not certain.

Any ideas? You guys are the only people I know who might know what the heck happened.

Is it the entire length of the area that is exposed to the sun? Pretty much straight lines?
The symmetry may suggest something like staple fiber (tufted) originating from different dye stock or run, reacting differently to ultra violet light.

But what the hell do I know. Just speculating.
Interesting.

Did a carpet like this years ago and never did determine the issue. It was on a seam in a room that had a tall window. The best we could come up with that it had to do with the seaming tape.

Possibly too high a PH.

I'd try a little Tannin or an acid just to see if there is any change. I'll give you that the lines are pretty straight, but it still looks like a chemical imbalance.

I had something similar happen some 12 years ago or so when i tried a product that was the greatest thing since sliced bread, turned the light carpet pink. I would first want to know how long ago it was cleaned by the last cleaner to eliminate the possibility of being the same shit used by the previous cleaner.

Richard's theory does not explain the straight lines. Even Chabbo's legendary (in his mind) employees have not accomplished such straight lines movement with their tools.
Could be related to some chemical reaction but still has to do with manufacturing and possibly different dye lots or some dye issues.

But what do I know? Never been trained in Topeka. Let alone by the mighty master his self :winky:

Check to see if the lines follow rows of tufts. If so, definitely would be related to manufacturering. There could also be lines that look straight but don't follow a tuft row. Then I would be looking at how it was cleaned and also what is under the carpet that might telegrpah through.

Just because the lines are "too straight" and go under the desk etcetera, doesn't mean it wasn't a result of previous cleaning attempts. It could have been cleaned when it was empty...the desk could have been relocated...

Could have had two different cleaners cleaning there before: where the second guy's juice reacted with the first guy's residue.

I had something similar once but the color was blue. What happened, the owner rented a rug doctor and apparently the user before him attempted to dye his carpets blue and didn't thoroughly clean the machine. When the guy activated the machine, he got blue streaking in pretty straight lines. Luckily he stopped before he went too far and we were able to get the blue out as it was still suspended in the soap.

The second picture looks to me like a leaky portable carpet cleaning machine...under powered or cleaning a soapy carpet and the guy didn't have any defoamer so bad suction and left carpet very wet. It would be interesting to see what's under the carpet...a pad, maybe jute, or did they install this over an existing floor ... laminate maybe, or old carpet. Last guess is he cleaned a throw rug of some kind on top of the just cleaned carpet and dye or whatever transferred from the throw rug...that had a striped design ... reaching... no idea. Hope someone figures this one out. :-)

Machine-tufted abrash, cool!

I've seen something very similar twice, both times in a short span of time probably ten years ago.

Both times continuous-dyed nylon-6. Both were very similar in color to the carpet shown here, looked just like this after cleaning, both had rebond foam pad underneath and no backing discoloration. Both were builder-installed and both times this happened after our first-time cleaning. One was in a pretty trashed family room cleaned using a Rotovac and a pH 11 prespray. That customer decided to live with it until they could shop for better carpet.

The other was throughout the second level and cleaned with a wand. That customer called the builder/retailer/mill rep and replacement was done without any feedback on the cause.

Possibly just a manufacturing fluke? Possibly excaberated by high pH?
