Websites are for homos who stand in the mirror and flex their muscles. They tell you nothing about a company other than what the designer wants you to see. I never bothered to make a website but I rank #1 in Google in my city (Clawson,MI).

Off topic and a website is as truthful and as informative as the company wants to make it. That's true of every kind of advertising.

The jerks at Rainbow Int. have latched their name to my company name trying to confuse people and quite possibly have stolen customers from me but se le vie. I'll git those suckers when the time is rite.

I'm fine with your opinion of websites....and I hate to hijack a thread but I just wanted to point out why.

Clawson is around 10k people, 5k households, and 3k families according to wikipedia.

There is VERY low search volume for carpet cleaning phrases in the area. This can be seen both with the adwords tool and the fact that right now only two places listings are being triggered.

Since only a two-pack is triggered the info from the places listings is used to display and the two listings closest to what google considers the geographic point closest to the query are displayed.

If search volume is increased, which is possible due to this thread, a 5pack would be triggered. You may remain number one then but there is a chance Modernistic and Chem-Dry would take your spot.

If enough search volume is generated to trigger a 7 pack then onsite factors are the primary factor. You don't have a site so at this point you would definitely be displaced......

Edited; so people don't get themselves sandboxed

anyway you rank number one because very few search for carpet cleaning related terms in the area and your location...................

if enough people in this thread search "carpet cleaning Clawson mi" it is very likely you would no longer be #1....not that it would really benefit anyone if that happened

Hey Fred,

Sooooo, if first in a seven pack, I'm doing good with my seo and crap)?!?

Would a program have to be created to "artificially increase search volume"?

Interesting how things change.

The Yellow Pages recieved Zero votes.

Not that long ago you had to be in the Yellow Pages and for many it was their only advertising.

I'm glad I got off that money train about 7 years ago.

Previous to that I gave them $1000 a month for 20 years.

It WAS carpet retailers until they started going out of business, and referrals now...trying to figure it out.

Use to be carpet retailers for me too.

Mine didn't go out of biz but the people who use to ask them for a referral are now going to Google/Yelp instead.

Which is fine by me cause I'll stand in front of a mirror all day and flex my muscle for all those great new clients my site brings me.

Just by doing an awesome job.

I do no marketing and one YP ad and website, which are being discontinued this spring. At this point I will be working strictly on a referral basis with a column listing in the phone book. I hope it doesn't backfire on me.

are you saying that you are getting rid of your website Doug?

Is it too much work to click the mouse to add blog content?

Actually, Yes. I don't how to change my website. I've never spent the time. I have a "pretty constant and predictable" workflow every year. This year has been very busy from the middle of February for me. Most of my work is through referral and just don't seem to pick up large quantities through the website. I do ask every new customer exactly how they came to call me, so I do know where they are coming from. Please convince me otherwise. I would sincerely appreciate the feedback.

Doug to be perfectly honest, your site is horrible.

There has to be other sites in your area that show the personality of the owner and employees. Your site will only generate calls if all the others dont answer the phone or their schedule is booked.

IF, IF you want more work than redo it, If you are content with your present work load that yes, it is a waste of time and money. Just realize that the world is changing and more and more home owners are going to the web to find service providers and at the same time your current, loyal client base is dying off, moving or installing wood floors.

Don't miss the boat IMO
